Description
Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot Clos de la Roche 2021 is a powerful yet finely etched expression of one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most revered Grand Cru vineyards. This is a wine that marries flinty red and black fruit with a striking mineral backbone, offering both immediate charm and serious intellectual depth. In a challenging vintage like 2021, this cuvée stands out for its purity, structure, and nuance, capturing the essence of Clos de la Roche with remarkable clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos de la Roche shows a deep, shimmering ruby color with garnet hues at the rim, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose may initially show a touch of reduction, but with air it opens attractively to reveal precise, flinty red fruit—think wild cherry, redcurrant, and cranberry—interlaced with notes of pressed rose petals, subtle spice, and a faint hint of wet stone.
On the palate, the wine is beautifully balanced and tightly focused, with crisp black fruit—black cherry, blackberry, and mulberry—supported by bright acidity and finely grained tannins. There is a distinct slate-like, almost graphite mineral character that runs through the mid-palate, giving the wine a chiselled, ‘rocky’ profile true to its name. The finish is persistent and refined, with lingering notes of dark berries, florals, and cool stone. Still very young, this Clos de la Roche will reward patience; it has excellent aging potential and should evolve gracefully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity, silkier texture, and more pronounced tertiary nuances of truffle, forest floor, and dried flowers.
Production
Clos de la Roche is one of the storied Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits, set on a patchwork of limestone-rich soils with thin topsoil and abundant stones that confer great structure and minerality to Pinot Noir. Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot works traditionally and carefully in these prized parcels, harvesting by hand to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe bunches are selected in a vintage as delicate as 2021. In the cellar, the grapes are gently vinified with a focus on preserving purity and terroir expression—typically involving a cold maceration, controlled fermentations, and judicious use of whole clusters depending on the year. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a sensitive approach to new oak, allowing the natural character of Clos de la Roche—its tension, minerality, and layered fruit—to shine rather than be obscured by wood.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir calls for refined dishes that can match its depth yet respect its elegance. Ideal pairings include roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal in a light jus, or game birds with mushroom-based sauces; it also sings alongside dishes with truffles, roasted root vegetables, and hard cheeses such as aged Comté. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity without muting the fruit. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help the initial reduction blow off and allow the wine’s floral and mineral nuances to fully emerge; as it ages, a gentle, shorter decant will suffice, primarily to separate any sediment.
Producer
Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot is a historic, family-run estate based in the Côte de Nuits, quietly stewarding some of Burgundy’s most coveted terroirs, including several Grand Crus. Over generations, the domaine has evolved from a low-profile grower to one of the region’s most closely watched producers, known for combining traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with an increasingly precise, terroir-driven approach. Their holdings in Grand Cru vineyards like Clos de la Roche are particularly prized, and recent vintages have drawn significant critical attention for their finesse, energy, and authenticity.
