Description

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2021 in magnum format is a benchmark Grand Cru red Burgundy from one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most revered estates. This is a wine of rare finesse and depth, combining sensual perfume with serious structure and a long life ahead. Sourced from ancient vines in the hallowed Musigny vineyard, it captures the elegance and energy of the 2021 vintage in a format ideal for slow, graceful evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, shimmering ruby color with youthful brightness at the rim, signaling both concentration and refinement. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered: sweet red berries and ripe cherries intertwined with rose petals, musk, blood orange zest, and a fine thread of exotic spice. With air, hints of crushed herbs, subtle earth, and delicate oak nuance emerge, adding complexity without ever overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this Musigny is medium to full-bodied, silken, and impeccably poised. The texture is caressing yet focused, with vibrant acidity carrying flavors of wild strawberries, red cherries, and pomegranate, wrapped in floral notes and gentle spice. The tannins are sweet, supple, and extremely fine-grained, giving structure without austerity. The finish is long, perfumed, and mouthwatering, promising impressive longevity. In magnum, this 2021 should evolve beautifully over 15–25+ years, with its aromatic complexity and velvety texture becoming even more harmonious over time.

Production
The Musigny Grand Cru vineyard sits on a privileged, steep slope above Chambolle-Musigny, with thin, limestone-rich soils over marl that naturally restrict yields and give wines of haunting perfume and mineral precision. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé works these old vines with meticulous care, favoring sustainable, low-intervention viticulture and careful bunch selection at harvest to ensure only pristine, perfectly ripe Pinot Noir reaches the cellar. The grapes are hand-picked, sorted, and traditionally vinified: gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a proportion of which is new, to lend subtle structure and depth without dominating the terroir-driven character. The result is a Grand Cru that expresses both the power of Musigny and the signature silkiness of Chambolle.

Food & Serving
This Musigny deserves thoughtful, refined pairings: roast pigeon or duck, delicate game birds, veal with morels, truffled poultry, or simply prepared lamb are all superb companions. It also shines with mature, hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or black truffle. Serve at 15–16°C (around 59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and balance. In youth, especially from magnum, decant gently for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to unfurl; as the wine matures, a brief decant mainly to remove any sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the historic pillars of Burgundy, with roots in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to the 15th century. The domaine is synonymous with the Musigny Grand Cru, of which it is the largest and most iconic owner, and its bottlings are considered reference points for the appellation’s hauntingly elegant, yet profound style. Over generations, the estate has championed low yields, old vines, and a meticulous, terroir-first approach in the vineyard and cellar. Today, under the new directorship of Jean Lupatelli, the domaine continues to refine its craft, producing wines that marry tradition with precision and purity, and maintaining its status as one of the most important and collectible producers in the Côte de Nuits.
