Description
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny 2007 is a benchmark Grand Cru red Burgundy from one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most revered estates. Sourced from the domaine’s venerable old vines, this wine captures the rare energy, depth and finesse that 2007 only achieved in the very best hands. It is a collector’s bottle with a reputation for sensual texture, complex minerality and a striking maritime character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2007 Musigny Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, shimmering ruby core with garnet highlights beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose is intensely expressive: waves of smoked meat, iodine, seaweed and salt-tinged maritime minerals wrap around layers of sweet red berries, cherry liqueur and ripe stone fruit, with hints of rose petal and subtle spice.
On the palate, this is both caressing and powerful, with a plush, polished texture and a remarkable purity of fruit. Sweetly ripe red and dark berries mingle with suggestions of spiced plum and cherry, lifted by vibrant acidity and profound savory-mineral undertones reminiscent of crushed shells and reduced crustacean stock. The finish is long, precise and saline, where almost candied berry sweetness is kept in perfect check by a firm, stony backbone. Already beautifully open, this vintage still has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for another 10–15 years in top cellars, gaining more tertiary complexity and silkier tannins.
Production
This Musigny Grand Cru is sourced from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s old-vine parcels (“Vieilles Vignes”) in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, on limestone-rich, well-drained soils that are famed for producing Pinot Noir of haunting perfume and finesse. The domaine practices meticulous vineyard work, with low yields, rigorous green harvesting and hand selection of fruit at harvest to ensure only optimally ripe, perfectly healthy bunches are used. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified with careful extraction to preserve delicacy and detail, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new) that supports, rather than dominates, the wine’s terroir-driven character. The result is a Grand Cru Burgundy that marries intensity with transparency and a distinctive mineral signature.
Food & Serving
This 2007 Musigny is a superb partner for refined cuisine: think roast pigeon or duck, veal sweetbreads, lamb saddle, or delicate preparations of venison. It also shines alongside earthy dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, truffle-infused poultry, or aged, nutty cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally at 15–16°C (59–61°F), to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended at this stage of its life to allow any initial reduction to blow off and for the wine’s subtle layers of fruit, spice and minerality to fully unfold.
