Description
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 2021 is a benchmark Grand Cru red Burgundy that marries power with refinement. Drawn from one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most revered climats, this wine captures the tension and clarity of the 2021 vintage while retaining Bonnes Mares’ signature muscular structure. It is a wine for collectors and Burgundy lovers seeking both immediate aromatic charm and serious long-term potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Bonnes Mares shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue, signalling concentration without heaviness. The nose is beautifully expressive, with layers of sweet red berries, ripe cherry, and wild strawberry intertwined with notes of woodsmoke, rose petals, and forest floor, echoing William Kelley’s impression of “sweet berries, cherries, vinous smoke, petals and loamy soil.” Subtle hints of spice and mineral undertones build with air, adding further complexity.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied for the vintage, rich and fleshy yet firmly structured. The attack is juicy and focused, with lively acidity lifting the succulent red and dark berry fruit. Powdery, finely knit tannins frame a layered core, giving the wine its characteristic Bonnes Mares muscle without compromising elegance. Savoury, saline nuances carry through to a long, precise and slightly salty finish. While already showing remarkable fragrance and detail, this Grand Cru will reward patience; optimal drinking will likely begin around 8–10 years from vintage and continue gracefully for two to three decades in a good cellar.
Production
Composed entirely of Pinot Noir, this Grand Cru comes from the storied Bonnes Mares vineyard, straddling Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, where limestone-rich soils with pockets of clay and marl give both finesse and power. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé farms these old vines with meticulous attention and low yields, harvesting by hand to ensure strict selection of only the healthiest, perfectly ripe grapes. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods are employed: careful sorting, gentle destemming (often with a proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage), and fermentation in open vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a judicious use of new oak—to integrate structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit, resulting in a Grand Cru of transparency, depth and longevity.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Bonnes Mares is a superb partner for refined dishes built around game and rich poultry, such as roasted duck, pigeon, venison loin, or squab, as well as classic Burgundian fare like coq au vin or beef bourguignon. It also shines alongside earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, truffle dishes, and root vegetable gratins—and well-aged semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decant gently for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; with extended bottle age, a brief, careful decant to remove sediment is sufficient.
