Description

Domaine Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2021 is a refined red Burgundy that beautifully captures the finesse and freshness of this cooler corner of the Côte de Beaune. Sourced from two premier cru lieux-dits that were comparatively spared from the severe frosts of 2021, it offers a more precise and perfumed expression than many village-level wines from the same vintage. This is a poised, classically styled Pinot Noir that shows how Auxey-Duresses continues to step out of the shadows of its more famous neighbors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant, translucent ruby color with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose is lifted and perfumed, with pure blackcurrant and cassis notes interwoven with violets, subtle dark cherry and a hint of wild berries, framed by a delicate floral and mineral edge. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and supple, with a juicy, immediate attack and finely tuned acidity that keeps everything fresh and lively. Dark blue and black fruits unfold gracefully—think blackberry, blackcurrant and ripe plum—supported by gentle, powdery tannins that give just enough grip. The finish is relatively generous and rounded for the vintage, showing an almost lush, blue-fruited character while remaining precise and elegant. Enjoyable now with some aeration, it should develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more earthy, savory nuances with time in bottle.

Production
This Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2021 comes from a blend of two premier cru lieux-dits in Auxey-Duresses, an appellation tucked into a cool, east- and southeast-facing side valley just west of Meursault and Volnay. The soils here are classic Burgundy: limestone and marl with good drainage, giving wines that balance ripe fruit with tension and minerality. 2021 was a challenging year marked by severe spring frosts, but these particular parcels were less affected, allowing for a balanced, healthy crop. The grapes—100% Pinot Noir—are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and fermented with a gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse rather than power. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak so that the wood supports, rather than dominates, the delicate fruit and floral profile of the wine.

Food & Serving
This 1er Cru Auxey-Duresses is very versatile at the table and pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, veal, pork tenderloin and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. It also works well with game birds, rabbit, and earthy vegetarian preparations such as lentils, roasted root vegetables or a wild-mushroom risotto. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic lift and freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the bouquet open and soften the tannins slightly, but a large glass and a bit of patience in the glass will also do the trick.

Producer
Domaine Comte Armand, based in Pommard, is one of the historic names of the Côte de Beaune, best known for its legendary monopole Clos des Epeneaux. The estate has built its reputation on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a traditional, terroir-driven approach in the cellar. Over the years, the domaine has expanded beyond Pommard to include select parcels in other appellations, including Auxey-Duresses, where it applies the same exacting standards. Highly regarded by Burgundy enthusiasts and critics alike, Domaine Comte Armand plays an important role in showcasing the nuance and potential of lesser-known villages alongside the region’s most celebrated crus.
