Description

Domaine Clos Frantin Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 is a striking example of one of Burgundy’s most legendary vineyards, crafted by Albert Bichot from a tiny 0.17-hectare parcel in Gevrey-Chambertin. With its rare pedigree, refined power, and deep historical roots dating back to the 13th century, this is a Grand Cru that speaks clearly of both place and tradition.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows the depth and concentration you would expect from Chambertin, with an elegant, intensely layered profile. Aromas move from dark cherry and boysenberry to crushed stone, pressed violet, green tea, cigar, prunes, dates, and a touch of rosemary, creating a nose that is both noble and highly expressive. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied, and powerful, yet held in balance by velvety texture and finely structured tannins. The finish is long, aromatic, and energetic, with the kind of depth that suggests excellent aging potential over many years, during which the wine should gain additional complexity and finesse.

Production
The 0.17-hectare Chambertin parcel sits on marl-rich soils, which tend to delay ripening and make it one of the last sites harvested at Domaine du Clos-Frantin. Vines are worked with horses and the fruit is handled with a light touch, including a significant proportion of whole bunches in vinification, to preserve aromatic purity and vineyard expression. The domaine follows organic principles, replacing herbicides and artificial fertilizers with plowing, compost, and strict pruning to keep yields low and quality high. After fermentation, the wine is transferred by gravity and matured for 12 to 18 months in oak barrels, with the barrel regime adapted to the vintage using woods from sources such as Tronçais and Allier, and varying toast levels. The aim is subtle oak integration that enhances complexity without masking the character of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roast duck, game birds, pigeon, beef fillet, venison, or mushroom-based preparations. Serve it at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours if drinking it young, as this can help open up the wine’s aromatic layers and soften its structure.

Producer
Albert Bichot is one of Burgundy’s most respected family houses, founded in 1831 and now run by the sixth generation, Albéric Bichot, who has led the company since 1996. The family owns six domaines across Burgundy’s greatest terroirs, with more than 100 hectares of vines, and Domaine du Clos-Frantin in Nuits-Saint-Georges is among its most prized estates. Known for meticulous vineyard work and a restrained winemaking approach, the house has earned an outstanding reputation for producing wines that faithfully reflect their appellations and origin.
