Description

Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 DEMI is a Grenache-led Rhône red with blackberry, lavender, anise and concrete-aged depth in demi format. It feels like Charvin in miniature, all garrigue, dark berries and firm southern warmth. The 375 ml bottle is a clever choice for two glasses now, or a small cellar slot for later.

About the Wine
Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 DEMI is drawn from the estate’s Grenache-led red blend. Mourvèdre and Syrah add darker spice. Vaccarèse and Counoise bring a local southern Rhône accent that feels very Charvin in this cuvée. The vines stand on garrigue-scented ground, with sandy soils layered over limestone and clay. That sandy top layer shows in the 2020 as lifted raspberry fruit and fragrant lavender. The clay and limestone give the wine its broad savory grip. The estate farms with a sustainable certification, and the dry southern air is present in the thyme and anise tones. Cellar work follows the restrained Charvin path. The wine ages for 21 months in concrete vats, which is central to the feel of this 2020 DEMI. Concrete keeps the nose close to ripe raspberry and blackberry. Anise and warm stone sit underneath. The élevage brings a smooth, cool-sided texture to a wine with 15% alcohol and real Châteauneuf warmth. The finish carries black pepper, licorice and dried herbs across a firm dry line.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2020 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is deep ruby, with a youthful purple flash in the demi bottle. The aroma starts with raspberry skin and blackberry compote, then turns toward lavender, anise and the dry thyme scent you notice along a hot stone path in the southern Rhône. The palate is full and dry, with silky tannins that spread across the tongue and a savory black pepper note that keeps returning after the fruit. Black cherry liqueur, licorice and crushed garrigue come through on the long finish, with a faint stony edge from the concrete-raised frame. Drink 2025-2035.

Food Pairing
This bottle wants food with browned edges, herbs and a little fat. For a regional match, pour it with daube provençale made with beef, orange peel and black olives. The wine’s lavender and anise notes pick up the Provençal herbs in the stew. It is also strong with roast leg of lamb, especially if the pan juices include rosemary and garlic. For a smaller table, the demi format is excellent with duck breast, saucisson sec and a wedge of aged Comté or Tomme de Savoie. The tannins have enough grip for venison loin, and the blackberry fruit gives the meat a darker, sweeter frame.

Producer
Domaine Charvin is a family domaine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Laurent Charvin has made its name with a cellar that favors concrete vats for the flagship red. The point that makes Charvin easy to recognize is the shape of the wine in the mouth, where generous Grenache fruit meets a savory, herbal line from the first pour. For this producer, concrete aging gives the Châteauneuf-du-Pape a smooth texture and keeps the scent centered on raspberry, blackberry, garrigue and spice rather than sweet barrel tones. Charvin’s blend also keeps space for local grapes such as Vaccarèse and Counoise, which add a peppery southern accent beside Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. The vineyards sit on the garrigue-marked soils of the appellation, and the 2020 DEMI carries that landscape in its lavender, thyme and anise notes. This half-bottle feels true to the domaine’s main red, with the same 21 months in concrete and the same dry, structured finish packed into a more intimate 375 ml format.
