Description

Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011 MG is a Grenache-led Rhône red with raspberry, lavender, pepper and old-foudre depth in magnum from Charvin. It feels mature, fragrant and still lively. The magnum format suits the wine well, giving the 2011 fruit room to stretch into spice and dried herb detail.

About the Wine
Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011 MG comes from organically farmed vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône. Grenache leads the blend, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding darker spice and firmer edges. The soils bring together galets roulés, sand and clay. That mix matters in this bottle. The rounded stones give a warm, sun-baked feel to the fruit. The sand keeps the perfume fine and open. The clay shows in the grip that sits under the cherry and raspberry. The 2011 wine is dry and carries 15% alcohol, yet the Charvin imprint is more about fragrance than weight. It spent 12 to 18 months in large old French oak foudres. Those vessels leave texture and quiet spice rather than a glossy oak stamp. The magnum format adds to the sense of calm development in the glass. The wine keeps its red-fruited core, then folds in lavender, black pepper and herbes de Provence. The élevage leaves a light baking-spice trace around the raspberry and cherry core.

Tasting Notes
Brilliant ruby still sits in the glass, with a faint garnet edge that fits a 2011 Domaine Charvin magnum. The nose opens on raspberry preserve, red cherry, lavender and a savory dusting of black pepper that feels very Charvin in its lifted whole-bunch style. On the palate it is dry and medium to full bodied, with sweet red fruit stretched over clay-toned grip and warm Châteauneuf stones. Old foudre aging shows through as gentle baking spice, polished texture and a finish that hangs on cherry skin, lavender and herbes de Provence. From magnum the wine sits in a graceful mature phase, with the fruit still present and the spice gaining detail. Drink 2014-2026.

Food Pairing
Pour this Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011 MG with roast lamb shoulder rubbed with rosemary, garlic and black pepper. The wine’s raspberry and cherry fruit will sit neatly beside the meat’s sweet edges, and its herbal finish echoes the roasting pan. A regional choice would be daube Provençale with olives, orange peel and thyme, especially if the sauce has time to darken and soften. Venison loin with juniper is another strong match, as the Mourvèdre side of the blend picks up the game and pepper. For cheese, choose aged Comté or a firm tomme, as the wine’s old-foudre spice and mature red fruit have enough depth for nutty, salty flavors.

Producer
Domaine Charvin gives its Châteauneuf-du-Pape red one estate bottling, and that single label has become the domaine’s signature. Laurent Charvin has guided the family property since the early 1990s, working from the northern side of the appellation and drawing on parcels with rounded stones, sand and clay. The wines are known for whole-bunch fermentation, a choice that shows clearly here in the lavender, pepper and lifted herbal perfume of the 2011. Charvin’s cellar approach keeps the focus on large, older vessels and long, calm élevage rather than small-barrel polish. In this magnum, that approach reads as a fine-grained texture and a clean line of red fruit under the southern Rhône warmth. The domaine’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a loyal following among drinkers who like the appellation’s power expressed through scent, stem spice and a transparent view of the vintage.
