Description

Domaine Bruno Clavelier Corton Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes “Le Rognet” 2022 is a powerful yet finely etched expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most historic hilltops. Sourced from old vines in the prestigious Le Rognet lieu-dit on the Corton slope, this Grand Cru marries intensity, precision and terroir-driven character in a vintage known for its purity of fruit. It is a wine crafted for collectors and Burgundy lovers seeking depth, aging potential and a true sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Corton Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at concentration and structure. The nose opens with dark red and black fruits—think wild cherry, blackcurrant and ripe raspberry—layered with notes of violet, rose petal and peony. Subtle undertones of forest floor, warm spice, crushed rock and a touch of oak-derived vanilla and toast emerge with air, adding complexity and dimension. On the palate, the wine is structured and precise, with a firm yet refined tannic backbone characteristic of Corton, wrapped around a core of juicy red and black fruit. Flavors of cherry, red plum and blackberry are interwoven with savory elements of tea leaf, sous-bois, licorice and a mineral-driven, almost saline edge. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving the wine both lift and length, and the finish is long, persistent and slightly earthy. While already promising in its youth, the 2022 has the stuffing to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining further nuance, silkier tannins and more pronounced tertiary notes with careful cellaring.

Production
The fruit for this wine comes from old Pinot Noir vines in the Le Rognet sector of the Corton hill, a prized Grand Cru terroir with marly limestone and clay soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The slope’s exposure and elevation provide excellent sun while preserving freshness, giving grapes that balance ripeness with vibrant acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe clusters are used. Domaine Bruno Clavelier is known for a traditional, low-intervention approach: gentle extraction, native fermentations where possible, and careful temperature control during vinification to preserve purity and finesse. Aging takes place in French oak barrels (with a judicious use of new oak) in cool cellars, allowing the wine to evolve slowly and harmoniously before bottling with minimal handling.

Food & Serving
This Corton Grand Cru is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, venison, lamb saddle, or veal in truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and mature, earthy cheeses like aged Comté or Cantal. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromatic complexity to open and the tannins to soften; as the wine matures, a shorter decant or simply allowing it to breathe in the glass will suffice.

Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is a highly regarded, artisan grower based in Vosne-Romanée, with family roots in Burgundy that stretch back several generations. The estate has earned a reputation for crafting precise, terroir-transparent wines from an enviable collection of old-vine parcels across some of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune’s most coveted appellations. Farming is typically attentive and respectful of the environment, often leaning toward organic and sustainable practices, with an emphasis on low yields and meticulous vineyard work. Within the region, Bruno Clavelier is celebrated for his commitment to expressing the individual character of each climat, and his Corton Grand Cru “Le Rognet” stands as a testament to the depth, structure and nobility that this legendary hillside can achieve in the right hands.
