Description
Domaine Belargus Rouères Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru 2018 is a benchmark sweet Chenin Blanc from one of the Loire Valley’s most revered terroirs. Crafted in minute quantities from painstakingly selected fruit, it marries decadent richness with electric freshness in a way only truly great Quarts de Chaume can. This is a contemplative, cellar‑worthy wine that showcases both the precision of Domaine Belargus and the unique character of this historic grand cru hillside.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Rouères shows a luminous golden hue with brilliant reflections, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely expressive yet refined: layers of ripe apricot, candied citrus peel, quince, and yellow plum interweave with acacia honey, chamomile, and subtle notes of beeswax, saffron, and wet stone. With air, more nuanced tones of dried pineapple, bergamot, and almond cream emerge, underscored by a distinct mineral thread.
On the palate, this wine is opulent but never heavy, with a silky, almost glycerol texture balanced by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors echo the nose—confit lemon, baked apple, mirabelle, and honeyed pear—lifted by saline, chalky minerality that gives the finish remarkable drive and length. The sweetness is beautifully integrated, feeling more like depth and volume than simple sugar. Still at the beginning of its evolution, the 2018 has significant aging potential: expect 15–25 years or more in a good cellar, during which it will develop notes of toast, nuts, spice, and complex tertiary nuances while retaining its core of freshness.
Production
Rouères is a prized parcel within Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru, characterized by steep, south‑facing schist slopes that capture maximum sunlight and encourage perfect ripening of Chenin Blanc. The poor, stony soils limit vigor and naturally concentrate the grapes, while proximity to the Layon river helps create the morning mists and afternoon sun that favor botrytis (noble rot). At Domaine Belargus, harvest is carried out entirely by hand through multiple meticulous passes (tries) in the vineyard, selecting only berries at optimal ripeness and/or botrytised concentration. In the cellar, vinification is deliberately gentle and minimalist: slow pressing, careful settling, and a patient, low‑intervention fermentation in inert and/or neutral vessels help preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is then aged on fine lees, allowing it to gain texture and complexity without the imprint of heavy new oak, before being bottled with a focus on balance rather than sheer sweetness.
Food & Serving
This Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru is superb with rich, refined dishes that can stand up to its intensity and sweetness. Classic pairings include foie gras (terrine or pan‑seared), blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Fourme d’Ambert, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. It also shines with dishes featuring apricot, pear, or apple—think roasted poultry with fruit, glazed pork, or spiced tagines—as well as fruit‑driven desserts that are not overly sweet (tarts, clafoutis, poached stone fruit). Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F); too cold will mute its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 30–60 minutes can help the wine open up in its youth, especially if enjoyed within the first decade of its life.
Producer
Domaine Belargus is a relatively young but already highly acclaimed estate in the Loire Valley, founded with the ambition of showcasing the finest terroirs of Anjou through a Burgundian‑style, single‑parcel approach. Under the guidance of an exacting, terroir‑driven philosophy, the domaine has quickly become a reference for dry and sweet Chenin Blanc, particularly in appellations such as Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru and Savennières. Belargus farms its vineyards with great respect for biodiversity and soil life (often along organic or biodynamic principles), emphasizing low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and precision in the cellar. Within the region, it is widely recognized as a key player in the modern renaissance of Anjou wines, with Rouères and other single‑parcel bottlings regularly attracting attention from critics and collectors for their depth, energy, and aging capacity.
