Description
Domaine Bart Marsannay Rouge Clos du Roy 2022 is a refined red Burgundy that showcases the rising stature of Marsannay and the precision of a serious village cru. Drawn from the historic Clos du Roy vineyard, this Pinot Noir offers impressive structure and depth while remaining wonderfully drinkable in its youth. It’s a wine that delivers classic Côte de Nuits character at a still-accessible level, making it a smart choice for Burgundy lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos du Roy shows a vibrant, medium ruby colour with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose opens with pure red berry aromas—wild strawberry, red cherry and cranberry—layered with notes of rose petals, pomegranate, subtle black tea, and a touch of crushed stone and spice.
On the palate, the wine is finely structured and precise, balancing bright, juicy fruit with a firm mineral backbone typical of this parcel. Flavours of red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant are underpinned by hints of violets, white pepper, and a delicate, savoury earthiness. The tannins are fine-grained yet present, giving the wine shape and length, while the acidity is lively and refreshing. The 2022 vintage offers immediate charm, but the underlying structure suggests it will benefit from a few years in bottle, evolving gracefully over 5–8 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Clos du Roy is one of Marsannay’s most prized sites, sitting on stony, limestone-rich soils with a thin topsoil that naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour. Domaine Bart farms their vineyards with a strong respect for the environment, encouraging healthy, low-yielding vines that reflect their terroir with clarity. Grapes for this cuvée are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the cellar. Vinification typically combines whole-cluster and destemmed grapes depending on the vintage, with a gentle, traditional fermentation in open vats to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity rather than power. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new wood so that the purity of Pinot Noir and the signature minerality of Clos du Roy remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Marsannay Clos du Roy is an excellent partner for refined yet flavourful dishes: roast chicken with herbs, duck breast, veal cutlets, rabbit, or pork tenderloin all work beautifully. It also pairs well with mushroom-based dishes, truffled risotto, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses like Reblochon or mild Comté. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic lift and fine texture. Young vintages will benefit from a brief decant of about 30–45 minutes to open up the nose and soften the tannins; as it gains a few years of bottle age, a gentle splash-decant just before serving is sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Bart is a respected family estate based in Marsannay, at the northern edge of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. The domaine has roots that trace back to the historic Clair-Daü estate, from which it inherited prime parcels in Marsannay and neighbouring appellations. Over the years, the Bart family has become one of the key quality reference points for Marsannay, helping to drive the appellation’s reputation upward through meticulous viticulture and a restrained, terroir-driven style. Their holdings in top sites like Clos du Roy are particularly prized, and the domaine is widely appreciated by Burgundy enthusiasts for offering wines of serious depth and character that still represent strong value within the Côte de Nuits.
