Description

Domaine A.F. Gros Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets 2022 is a refined, terroir-driven expression of Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s most characterful premier cru vineyards. This cuvée captures the power and depth typical of Pommard, while showcasing the finesse and aromatic clarity that have made Domaine A.F. Gros a reference in Burgundy. From the generous yet balanced 2022 vintage, it offers both early charm and the promise of graceful evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with bright purple highlights, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is immediately expressive, with layers of ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries, and crushed raspberries, intertwined with notes of violet, peony, and a subtle floral sweetness. Underneath the fruit lie more serious tones of warm earth, graphite, and a touch of cocoa and sweet spice from judicious oak aging. On the palate, the 2022 Les Arvelets is structured yet polished, with a backbone of fine-grained tannins that supports a core of succulent red and dark berry fruit. Hints of red plum, black cherry, and cranberry are lifted by fresh acidity, while nuances of forest floor, licorice, and a delicate toastiness add complexity on the long, persistent finish. Still youthful, it already shows impressive balance and precision. Enjoyable in its early years for its fruit and perfume, it has very good aging potential; under proper cellaring conditions, it should evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, gaining more savory, truffled, and gamey nuances with time.

Production
Les Arvelets is a well-regarded premier cru site in Pommard, situated on classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils with good drainage and an exposition that encourages full ripening while retaining freshness. The combination of stony subsoils and slightly iron-rich clays tends to give wines with both depth of fruit and a firm, ageworthy structure. At Domaine A.F. Gros, vineyard work is meticulous, with careful yield control and hand-harvesting to ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy Pinot Noir grapes reach the cellar. Vinification typically follows a gentle, traditional Burgundian approach: partial or total destemming depending on vintage character, a cold maceration to enhance aromatic expression, and fermentation in open vats with regular but delicate punch-downs or pump-overs to extract color, flavor, and tannin without harshness. Aging in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak, allows the wine to gain texture and complexity while respecting the purity of the terroir and the precision of the 2022 vintage.

Food & Serving
This Pommard 1er Cru is a superb partner for refined yet flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, lamb chops with herbs, veal in morel sauce, or classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon. It also complements game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a gentle decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Domaine A.F. Gros is the estate of Anne-Françoise Gros, a member of one of Burgundy’s most respected winemaking families, with deep roots in both Pommard and Vosne-Romanée. Established in the late 20th century, the domaine brings together parcels inherited from the Gros family holdings, allowing Anne-Françoise and her family to craft wines from some of the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits’ most coveted appellations. Known for a style that marries intensity with elegance, the domaine has become a benchmark for finely crafted, terroir-expressive Burgundy. Their Pommard 1er Cru cuvées, including Les Arvelets, are particularly admired for showing the commune’s traditional structure and depth while retaining a supple, polished texture and remarkable aromatic purity.
