Description
Di Giulia Benedetto 2019 is a characterful red from Italy’s Marche region, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano and Sangiovese into a joyful, yet thoughtful wine. It feels both youthful and wise: bright with red fruit, but underpinned by depth and tenderness. Conceived as the late-season “extra gift” after the estate’s white wines, Benedetto isn’t a wine that strives to impress – it simply and generously reveals what it is: open, fresh and disarmingly sincere.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Di Giulia Benedetto 2019 shows a vibrant ruby-red color with violet highlights, clear and lively at the rim. The nose opens with juicy red cherry, wild strawberry and ripe plum, followed by hints of violets, dried herbs, a touch of sweet spice and a gentle earthy undertone that speaks of its Italian roots.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, supple and energetic, with a playful, almost “jovial” freshness. Red berry fruit leads the way, supported by soft, well-integrated tannins and a bright, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything light on its feet. The Cabernet brings structure and a darker fruit nuance, while Montepulciano and Sangiovese contribute juiciness, savory notes and a lightly rustic charm. The finish is clean and persistent, with a subtle spice and a pleasant, youthful grip. Best enjoyed within 4–6 years from the vintage to capture its vivid fruit and lively personality.
Production
Benedetto originates in the rolling hills of Marche, where vineyards benefit from a mix of maritime and inland influences, with clay-limestone soils that lend both freshness and structure to the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, often later in the season as one of the final picks of the vintage, allowing for full flavor development without losing acidity. In the cellar, the three varieties are vinified with a gentle approach: fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aromatic clarity, followed by maturation in neutral vessels (cement or older wood) to soften tannins while keeping the wine’s pure, red-fruited profile front and center. The aim is transparency and drinkability rather than heavy extraction or overt oak.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food-loving red that pairs beautifully with everyday Italian fare and simple, honest cooking. Try it with tomato-based pastas, wood-fired pizza (especially Margherita, salumi or mushroom toppings), grilled sausages, roast chicken, pork chops, or rustic dishes with lentils and beans. It also works well with semi-hard cheeses like Pecorino or Asiago. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); a light chill in warmer weather can be very pleasant. A brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe helps the aromas open up, though the wine is charming and approachable straight from the bottle.
Producer
Di Giulia is a small, quality-focused producer from Marche, a region that quietly bridges Italy’s Adriatic coast and Apennine hills. Known more to insiders than to tourists, Di Giulia has earned a reputation for soulful wines that capture both the brightness and the depth of the local landscape. Benedetto is their late-harvested red, created after the tension and precision of their whites, almost as a final, generous gesture of the season. By working with traditional Italian grapes like Montepulciano and Sangiovese alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Di Giulia highlights Marche’s ability to craft reds that are at once authentic, approachable and subtly complex.
