Description
Derenda Merlot 2018 is a characterful red from the stony hills of Kras in Slovenia, where an ‘international’ grape takes on a distinctly local accent. Grown on limestone bedrock, this Merlot is all about freshness, lift, and a clean, vertical structure rather than heavy, jammy fruit. It’s a brilliant example of how a familiar variety can feel completely new in the right terroir, offering both approachability and genuine complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Derenda Merlot 2018 shows a vibrant ruby-red color with youthful highlights that hint at its energy and freshness. The nose is bright and inviting, with aromas of red berries, wild strawberries, and ripe plum, supported by subtle floral tones and a gentle herbal edge typical of cooler, limestone-driven sites.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and zesty, with crunchy red fruit at the core—think red cherry, cranberry, and plum—wrapped in a lively acidity that keeps everything lifted and refreshing. The tannins are firm yet fine-grained and well-balanced, giving just enough grip to frame the fruit without weighing it down. A long, clean finish underscores mineral notes from the limestone soils. Drinking beautifully now, it has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining a touch more softness and complexity with time.
Production
Derenda’s Merlot vines grow in the Kras region, a distinctive limestone plateau known for its rocky soils, red karst earth, and constant winds that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The limestone bedrock plays a crucial role, lending the wine its vertical, fresh profile and subtle mineral backbone. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic purity, with careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used. In the cellar, fermentation is likely carried out in stainless steel or neutral vessels to protect the vivid fruit character, followed by aging in tank or older barrels to soften the tannins without masking the terroir-driven freshness, resulting in a Merlot that is both expressive and elegantly restrained.
Food & Serving
This Merlot is wonderfully food-friendly and comes into its own at the table. Pair it with charcuterie, aged cheeses, and rustic meat dishes such as grilled lamb chops, roast pork, or herb-crusted chicken. It also works well with tomato-based pastas, mushroom risottos, and hearty vegetable stews. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help open up the nose and smooth the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
Derenda is part of the new wave of Slovenian producers shining a light on the unique character of the Kras region, where the rugged karst landscape and limestone soils shape distinctive, terroir-driven wines. Working on a plateau that straddles the cultural and historical influences of Slovenia and northeastern Italy, Derenda focuses on expressing place as much as grape variety, giving even classic international grapes like Merlot a clearly local identity. Through careful vineyard work and restrained winemaking, the estate has contributed to raising Kras’s profile among wine enthusiasts who seek authenticity, freshness, and a sense of origin in their reds.
