Description
De Venoge Champagne Princes Extra Brut is a beautifully sculpted cuvée that showcases the elegance and precision of one of Champagne’s historic houses. Crafted from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, it’s a refined, dry style that highlights purity of fruit and finesse rather than sweetness. The “Princes” range, originally created in the early 20th century and revived in recent years, pays tribute to the aristocratic decanter-shaped bottles once reserved for European nobility.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Princes Extra Brut shows a bright, pale golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse that speaks to careful aging and meticulous blending. On the nose, it opens with lifted citrus and white flowers, followed by ripe orchard fruits—pear and apple—layered with hints of toasted brioche, almond and a subtle chalky minerality.
The palate is taut and vibrant, with the low dosage (Extra Brut) allowing the natural freshness and structure of the wine to shine. Chardonnay brings tension and citrus precision, Pinot Noir adds red-fruited depth and gentle spice, while Pinot Meunier rounds the blend with suppleness and charm. Expect flavors of lemon zest, green pear, white peach and pastry cream, framed by a clean, mineral backbone and a long, dry, saline finish. While already drinking beautifully on release, this cuvée has the concentration and acidity to develop further complexity over 4–6 years in the cellar, gaining more brioche, hazelnut and honeyed nuances.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected vineyards across the Champagne region—typically including chalk-rich sites in the Côte des Blancs, Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne—Princes Extra Brut is built on De Venoge’s hallmark of precision and clarity. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure gentle handling and precise selection of bunches, preserving freshness and aromatic purity. After a soft pressing, the must is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel to protect delicate fruit and floral notes, with malolactic fermentation often employed to bring balance to the taut Champagne acidity. The wines are then blended and bottled for secondary fermentation, followed by extended aging on the lees in De Venoge’s cellars, contributing to the fine bead, creamy texture and subtle pastry complexity that define the Princes style before a very low dosage is added at disgorgement.
Food & Serving
Princes Extra Brut is an exceptionally versatile Champagne at the table, particularly suited to refined, lighter dishes. It shines alongside fresh oysters, caviar, sashimi, tuna tartare and delicate seafood crudo, as well as classic pairings like lobster, scallops, sushi and simply grilled white fish. Its crisp structure also works beautifully with goat cheese, young Comté, tempura, or lightly fried appetizers. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or an elegant Champagne carafe can help the aromas open up, but extended decanting is not necessary—pour gently and allow it to evolve as you drink.
