Description
De Loach Winery Chardonnay California Heritage Reserve 2022 is a classic California Chardonnay that delivers generous fruit, a touch of oak, and effortless drinkability. Crafted to showcase the Golden State’s sunshine and coastal influence, it offers a polished balance between richness and freshness. This Heritage Reserve bottling highlights De Loach’s long-standing commitment to sustainable growing and elegant, terroir-driven Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Heritage Reserve Chardonnay shows a bright, medium straw color with glints of gold. The nose is inviting and expressive, offering ripe notes of baked apple, pear, and yellow stone fruit layered with vanilla cream, buttered toast, and a hint of lemon curd and baking spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and smoothly textured, with a creamy mouthfeel supported by a lively line of acidity. Flavors of ripe pear, Golden Delicious apple, and pineapple are framed by subtle oak tones—vanilla, toasted brioche, and a touch of caramel. The finish is clean and gently rounded, with citrus zest and a whisper of minerality keeping things fresh. This is a Chardonnay meant to be enjoyed in its youth, over the next 2–4 years, while the bright fruit and integrated oak are at their peak.
Production
The De Loach California Heritage Reserve Chardonnay is sourced from select vineyard sites across California, drawing on a mix of coastal and inland terroirs to achieve both ripeness and freshness. Cooler influences—often from foggy mornings and coastal breezes—help preserve acidity and aromatic lift, while warmer daytime temperatures bring depth and richness to the fruit. Grapes are typically harvested at night or in the early morning to protect their delicate aromatics, then gently pressed. The juice is fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak, with a portion undergoing malolactic fermentation to add creaminess and complexity while retaining enough brightness for balance. Thoughtful oak aging—usually in a measured percentage of French and/or American barrels—rounds out the texture and imparts subtle vanilla and toast without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, seared scallops, creamy pasta dishes, grilled salmon, and richer vegetable preparations like mushroom risotto or butternut squash gratin. It also works well with soft cow’s milk cheeses and mildly spiced dishes. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase its balance of fruit and oak; remove from the fridge about 15–20 minutes before pouring. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into glasses and giving it a few minutes to open will help the aromatics fully express themselves.
