Description

D’Armailhac 2021 is a poised and finely detailed Pauillac that captures the classical charm of Bordeaux in a fresher, modern register. Brimming with dark fruit, cool herbal lift and polished tannins, it offers serious pedigree from one of the Médoc’s most historic estates without feeling overly heavy or austere. This 2021 is often compared to a contemporary take on the château’s much-loved 1999, promising an equally generous and versatile drinking window.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, D’Armailhac 2021 shows a deep ruby-purple hue with youthful brightness at the rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with vibrant aromas of blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, laced with a cool note of mint and fresh herbs. Subtle layers of pencil shavings, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and a touch of licorice add classic Pauillac complexity and a refined, slightly smoky nuance. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied and beautifully polished. A juicy, fleshy core of dark berry fruit is framed by silky, fine-grained tannins that glide rather than grip. Flavors of cassis, black plum and brambly berries are lifted by hints of graphite, cocoa, licorice and gently sweet spice, leading into a long, savory finish marked by that signature licorice note. The structure is harmonious rather than massive, making the wine accessible in its youth yet clearly built to evolve. Expect an enjoyable drinking window stretching from early approachability after a few years in bottle through a solid decade or more in a good cellar.

Production
D’Armailhac’s vineyards lie in the heart of Pauillac, on classic deep gravel soils over limestone and clay, shared by some of the appellation’s most prestigious châteaux. These well-draining gravel mounds, coupled with the tempering influence of the nearby Gironde estuary, provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions to ripen slowly and evenly. The grapes—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot—are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only healthy, balanced fruit is used. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for a gentle, precise extraction of color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged in oak barriques (a proportion new), where it gains texture, aromatic complexity and integration before bottling, all while preserving the vintage’s natural freshness and clarity.

Food & Serving
D’Armailhac 2021 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside classic, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled ribeye, beef tournedos, venison, or duck breast, as well as richer, herb-laced dishes like braised short ribs or lamb shanks with rosemary and thyme. On the softer side, try it with hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or mature cheddar, or with earthy mushroom dishes and truffle-inflected risottos. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and fine structure. Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to open the bouquet and soften the tannins, while more mature bottles can simply be gently opened and poured after a brief aeration.

Producer
Château d’Armailhac is a classified Fifth Growth estate in Pauillac, with roots dating back to the 18th century and a long-standing reputation as a source of elegant, classically styled Médoc. Once known as Château Mouton d’Armailhacq, the property came under the stewardship of Baron Philippe de Rothschild in the mid-20th century and today sits alongside Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Clerc Milon in the same illustrious family portfolio. Its vineyards occupy prime Pauillac gravel terroir neighboring some of the region’s most revered crus, and in recent decades quality has risen steadily thanks to meticulous vineyard work and modernized winemaking. D’Armailhac is now widely recognized as one of the best-value classed growths in Bordeaux, consistently offering authentic Pauillac character, refinement and age-worthiness at a comparatively accessible level.
