Description

Daniele Ricci Derthona Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Bio 2020 is a characterful white wine from Piemonte that showcases one of Italy’s most exciting rediscovered grape varieties. Named after the historical term for Tortona, “Derthona” underlines the deep roots of Timorasso in these hills and the wine’s strong sense of place. Certified organic and crafted in small quantities, this cuvée brings together authenticity, terroir expression and age‑worthy structure in one compelling bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Timorasso shows a luminous straw‑yellow colour with golden reflections that hint at both ripeness and concentration. Swirling the wine reveals excellent viscosity, suggesting a textured palate. The nose is intense and layered, with aromas of ripe yellow stone fruit, citrus zest and baked apple supported by notes of chamomile, acacia blossom and wild herbs. With some air, deeper nuances of honey, almond, flint and a subtle saltiness emerge, reflecting the mineral‑rich soils of the Colli Tortonesi. On the palate, the wine is full‑bodied and structured, combining generous fruit with a firm spine of acidity. Flavours of pear, quince and lemon peel are joined by savoury, almost saline tones and a gentle almond bitterness on the long finish. The texture is mouth‑coating yet vibrant, making the wine at once gastronomic and highly drinkable. Thanks to Timorasso’s naturally high acidity and extract, this 2020 vintage has excellent aging potential: expect it to develop further complexity over the next 8–10 years, gaining notes of beeswax, dried fruit and deeper mineral nuances with time in bottle.

Production
The vineyards for Derthona are located in the small commune of Costa Vescovato, about 12 km southwest of Tortona, in the heart of the Colli Tortonesi hills. Here, the slopes are composed predominantly of marl and clay‑rich soils, which give Timorasso both its marked minerality and its structural depth. The terraces planted in 1995 provide naturally limited yields and excellent exposure, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving acidity. All of Daniele Ricci’s vineyards are farmed organically, with an emphasis on soil health, biodiversity and manual work in the vines. The Timorasso grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed to preserve aromatics and purity of fruit. Fermentation typically takes place with careful temperature control, often with extended lees contact to build texture and complexity, followed by maturation in tank or neutral vessels so that the grape and terroir can remain at the forefront without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Derthona Timorasso is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes, particularly those from Northern Italy. It pairs beautifully with rich fish preparations such as roasted sea bass, turbot or cod, as well as seafood risotto, octopus, and shellfish. Its structure and subtle savouriness also make it excellent with veal tonnato, roasted poultry, rabbit, mushroom‑based dishes and aged or semi‑hard cheeses like Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight both freshness and texture. The wine benefits from a brief decant of 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, to open up the aromatic profile and fully reveal its mineral and herbal complexity.

Producer
The Ricci family estate, Azienda Agricola Ricci Carlo Daniele, is a small, quality‑driven winery rooted in the hills of Costa Vescovato in Piemonte. Daniele Ricci has become one of the notable champions of Timorasso, helping to drive the renaissance of this once‑endangered native white grape that has historic ties to the Tortona (Derthona) area dating back to at least the 15th century. Working organically and with a clear focus on expressing terroir, the estate has earned a reputation among enthusiasts for distinctive, age‑worthy whites that stand apart from more widely known Piemontese varieties. By reviving traditional practices and combining them with thoughtful, low‑intervention winemaking, Ricci has contributed significantly to the growing recognition of Colli Tortonesi as a serious white‑wine region on both the Italian and international stage.
