Description
Dalla Valle Maya 2019 is a benchmark Napa Valley red, crafted from one of California’s most coveted hillside vineyards. This is a powerful yet supremely graceful wine, marrying remarkable fruit purity with a finely etched structure built for the long haul. A true collector’s bottle, it represents the pinnacle of the estate’s Cabernet-based blends. Maya is sourced from a singular parcel on the eastern slopes above Oakville, an amphitheater-like vineyard that looks across to icons such as Screaming Eagle. The blend in 2019 is approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Cabernet Franc, giving both depth and aromatic lift. Since its debut in the early 1990s, Maya has earned a place among California’s most sought-after wines, consistently celebrated by critics and collectors alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Maya shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, with an almost opaque core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is strikingly pure and layered, opening slowly with blackberries, wild blueberries, and boysenberry compote, then unfolding into kirsch, blackcurrant, and redcurrant. Floral notes of violets and red roses mingle with more complex nuances of cardamom, iron ore, fallen leaves, pencil shavings, and crushed stones, creating an aromatic profile that is both luxurious and finely detailed.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with an almost weightless intensity. The attack is silky yet tightly coiled, showcasing beautifully polished, firm tannins that are long, linear, and impeccably shaped. Dark and red fruits interweave—blackberry, blueberry, and ripe plum with hints of red cherry and currant—lifted by a vibrant line of acidity and a distinct mineral edge. Subtle savory and graphite tones add complexity through the mid-palate, leading to a finish that is luminous, energetic, and incredibly persistent. This 2019 Maya is still reserved and youthful, and while already captivating in its grace and precision, it has outstanding aging potential; properly cellared, it should evolve and gain further complexity over 20–30 years or more.
Production
Maya is drawn from a special east-facing hillside block of the Dalla Valle estate, nestled in the foothills above Oakville, just below Pritchard Hill. The site combines elevated exposure, excellent drainage, and poor, rocky, volcanic soils with veins of iron-rich clay—conditions that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor, while imparting a distinctive mineral character. Grapes are hand-harvested in small lots at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only pristine fruit enters the cellar. Vinification typically involves cold soak for gentle extraction, followed by fermentation in small stainless-steel or concrete tanks with attentive temperature control and frequent tasting to fine-tune the maceration. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for an extended period, allowing the tannins to integrate and the aromatic profile to gain complexity without overshadowing the purity of fruit and the signature of the site.
Food & Serving
This is a grand, cellar-worthy wine that shines alongside refined, richly flavored dishes. Pair it with dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-braised short ribs, or venison with a red wine reduction to highlight its depth and structure. It also complements truffle-inflected dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression; in its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatics and soften the tannins. Older, cellar-aged bottles should be decanted more gently and briefly, primarily to separate any sediment.
Producer
Dalla Valle Vineyards was established in the mid-1980s by Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle and quickly gained a reputation as one of Napa Valley’s leading small estates. Perched on the hillsides above Oakville, the winery focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from its meticulously farmed, estate-grown vineyards, which have become synonymous with intensity, elegance, and terroir expression. Maya—named after the founders’ daughter—was introduced as a special cuvée highlighting the estate’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from a single, extraordinary parcel, and it has since achieved near-mythical status among collectors. With consistently high critical acclaim and a commitment to precision farming and thoughtful, small-lot winemaking, Dalla Valle remains a reference point for world-class, ageworthy Cabernet-based wines from Napa Valley.
