Description
Dal Forno’s Valpolicella is one of the most iconic modern interpretations of Veneto’s classic red: concentrated, powerful, and built with remarkable precision. This 2003 Jeroboam (500 cl) comes from a pioneering producer whose meticulous approach and use of dried fruit have helped redefine what Valpolicella can be, turning a traditional regional wine into something much more profound and age-worthy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows an intense, dark ruby core with plenty of youthful depth despite its age. The nose is layered and slowly unfolding, with jammy black fruit at the forefront, followed by notes of chocolate, leather, coffee, and sweet spice as it opens. On the palate, it is broad-shouldered and expansive, with generous fruit wrapped around firm tannins and a structure that still feels tightly coiled. The 2003 vintage gives it extra ripeness and warmth, but there is enough concentration to keep everything in balance.
This is a wine that is still very much in a primary phase and will reward patience. While it has the structure to age for many years, it also benefits enormously from extended aeration if opened young, with 8 to 10 hours of air recommended to fully reveal its depth and complexity.
Production
Sourced from Veneto’s Valpolicella zone, this wine reflects Dal Forno’s distinctive, highly controlled style and the region’s limestone-rich hillside terroirs. From the 2002 vintage onward, the Valpolicella was made from 100% dried fruit, giving the wine extraordinary concentration, density, and power. The vinification is equally exacting, with a strong emphasis on extraction and long aging in new oak, historically 100% new American oak, which contributes to the wine’s signature richness and spicy, polished character.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes such as braised beef, venison, roasted lamb, game birds, or mature hard cheeses. It also works well with truffled dishes and slow-cooked Italian cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and if opening before drinking, decanting is highly recommended—ideally for several hours, especially if the wine has not been cellared for long.
Producer
Romano Dal Forno is widely regarded as one of the most influential producers in modern Veneto. His estate in the Valpolicella region is known for uncompromising standards, low yields, meticulous fruit selection, and an innovative approach that has elevated the reputation of Valpolicella on the international stage. Dal Forno’s wines have earned a devoted following for their intensity, longevity, and distinctive style, and they remain benchmarks for the region.
