Description

Crozes-Hermitage La Guiraude by Alain Graillot is a benchmark Northern Rhône Syrah, prized for its depth, precision, and striking sense of place. Sourced from the domaine’s best old-vine parcels and crafted with Graillot’s hallmark restraint, it offers a more concentrated, age-worthy expression than the classic Crozes-Hermitage bottling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby-purple color with a vivid, youthful edge. The nose is expressive and layered, with black cherry, blackberry, violet, cracked pepper, smoked meat, licorice, and the savory mineral notes that define great Syrah from the Rhône. On the palate, it is usually fuller and more structured than standard Crozes-Hermitage, combining ripe dark fruit with freshness, fine tannins, and a spicy, almost ferrous savory core. The finish tends to be long and persistent, with plenty of energy and the balance to develop beautifully over time. While enjoyable in its youth with air, it has the structure to age gracefully for 8–15 years, sometimes longer in strong vintages.

Production
La Guiraude comes from selected old vines in Crozes-Hermitage, where alluvial and stony soils contribute both ripeness and a mineral backbone. Alain Graillot is known for working organically and harvesting by hand to preserve fruit purity and vineyard expression. Vinification is typically traditional and minimal-intervention: whole-cluster or partially destemmed fermentation depending on the vintage, native yeasts, and maturation in used oak to avoid overwhelming the fruit. The result is a Syrah that feels focused, elegant, and distinctly Northern Rhône in character.

Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, game birds, or dishes with mushrooms and thyme. It also works beautifully with richly flavored charcuterie, braised short ribs, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.

Producer
Domaine Alain Graillot is one of the most respected names in Crozes-Hermitage, having helped elevate the appellation’s reputation for serious Syrah. Alain Graillot’s influence was built on a clear philosophy: organic viticulture, low intervention in the cellar, and an unwavering focus on terroir. The domaine has earned a devoted following among collectors and sommeliers for its consistency and purity, with La Guiraude standing as the estate’s more concentrated, coveted cuvée. It is widely regarded as a reference point for modern Northern Rhône red wine.
