Description
E. Guigal’s Château d’Ampuis Côte-Rôtie is one of the northern Rhône’s most celebrated wines, combining the power of Syrah with a graceful lift of Viognier. Sourced from some of the appellation’s finest steep terraces, it is a benchmark expression of Côte-Rôtie and a wine with real historical prestige.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 vintage typically shows a deep, concentrated colour with vivid purple reflections. The nose is layered and refined, offering dark berry fruit, blackberry, violet, black pepper, smoked meat, and hints of leather, olive, and spice.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, yet polished, with ripe tannins and impressive length. The Syrah brings depth and savoury intensity, while the small addition of Viognier adds aromatic lift and elegance. This is a wine built for the long haul and should develop beautifully over many years, gaining even more complexity with bottle age.
Production
Château d’Ampuis is crafted from old-vine Syrah and a small proportion of Viognier grown on the steep granite and schist terraces of Côte-Rôtie, where the vineyard landscape demands painstaking manual work. The terroir contributes both concentration and finesse, with warm exposure balanced by the freshness of the Rhône Valley climate.
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before vinification. E. Guigal is known for precise, traditional winemaking combined with extended ageing in oak, which helps build texture, complexity, and ageing potential while preserving the distinctive character of the appellation.
Food & Serving
This wine is ideal with richly flavoured dishes such as roasted lamb, beef fillet, venison, game birds, or slow-cooked short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic depth.
Producer
Founded in 1946 in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers, known for its meticulous vineyard work and consistently outstanding wines. The estate has played a major role in elevating the global reputation of Côte-Rôtie and other northern Rhône appellations. Château d’Ampuis stands as one of its flagship wines, admired for both power and refinement.
