Why shop with us?
Cos d’Estournel is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most iconic names, offering a Grand Cru Classé that combines power, precision, and remarkable elegance. The 2023 vintage comes from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, known for its distinctive style, deep concentration, and age-worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep garnet color with a vibrant youthful edge in its early years. Aromas often unfold with blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, and hints of spice and exotic nuance, all framed by polished oak and mineral freshness. On the palate, it is layered and structured, with ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a long, persistent finish that balances richness with Saint-Estèphe’s signature freshness.
While approachable in youth with decanting, this is a wine built for the cellar and should develop beautifully over time. Expect the fruit to evolve toward more savory, earthy, and truffle-driven complexity with age.
Production
Cos d’Estournel comes from Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly rises and clay-limestone soils help produce wines of depth, freshness, and firm structure. The estate benefits from a maritime-influenced climate that supports even ripening and preserves natural acidity. Harvesting is typically done with great precision parcel by parcel, followed by careful vinification designed to capture purity of fruit, tannin finesse, and the estate’s distinctive aromatic signature.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with premium cuts of beef, lamb, duck, game birds, and dishes with mushroom or truffle accents. It also works well with rich vegetarian dishes such as lentil and root vegetable casseroles. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and structure to open fully.
Producer
Cos d’Estournel is a legendary Bordeaux estate with a history dating back to the early 19th century, founded by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel. Located just north of the village of Saint-Estèphe, it has long been admired for its bold style and exceptional consistency, earning its place as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. Over the years, the château has become one of the region’s most recognizable and respected producers, known worldwide for wines of character, longevity, and refinement.
