Description
Cos d’Estournel 2011 is a distinguished Second Growth from Saint-Estèphe, one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Known for its exotic pagoda-style architecture and powerful, age-worthy wines, the château combines the classic structure of the Médoc with a distinctive, opulent character. The 2011 vintage offers an appealing balance of ripe fruit, savoury complexity and firm but polished tannins.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by nuances of cedar, tobacco, graphite, spice and subtle earth. On the palate, it is structured and concentrated, with dark berry fruit supported by fresh acidity and refined tannins. Notes of dark chocolate, liquorice and savoury spice emerge with air, leading to a long, elegant finish.
With more than a decade of bottle age, this vintage is entering an attractive stage of development, showing both mature tertiary complexity and plenty of vitality. It should drink beautifully now and continue to evolve over the next several years when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
The vineyards of Cos d’Estournel benefit from the gravelly soils typical of the Médoc, with clay-rich layers that help retain water and contribute depth and structure. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each parcel to be vinified separately. The wine is then matured in oak, where it develops additional complexity, polish and savoury character before blending and bottling.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to serving temperature. Decanting for around one to two hours is recommended to soften the tannins and release the wine’s aromatic detail, while older bottles should be poured carefully off any sediment. Its structure and depth make it an excellent match for roast beef, grilled or braised lamb, venison, duck, rich mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe and was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification of Médoc wines. Founded in the early 19th century by Louis Gaspard Lacoste, the estate became famous for its striking pagodas, inspired by the owner’s travels in the East, as well as for its powerful, richly textured wines. Today, Cos d’Estournel remains one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious names, celebrated for combining Saint-Estèphe’s characteristic structure with remarkable elegance and longevity.
