Description
Cos d’Estournel 2011 is a distinguished Second Growth from Saint-Estèphe, one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Known for its exotic pagoda-topped château and richly styled wines, Cos d’Estournel combines the structure of the Médoc with an opulent, polished character. The 2011 vintage offers an appealing balance of ripe fruit, savoury complexity and mature drinking pleasure.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and subtle spice. With further aeration, hints of leather and earth begin to emerge. The palate is full-bodied and composed, with concentrated dark fruit, firm yet refined tannins and a fresh mineral edge. A long, savoury finish brings notes of dark chocolate, spice and cassis. Enjoyable now with decanting, it should continue to develop over the next several years.
Production
The vineyards of Cos d’Estournel lie on the gravelly hill of Saint-Estèphe, where well-draining soils over clay foundations encourage both ripeness and structure. The estate’s wines are typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and smaller proportions of other traditional Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are carefully selected and vinified parcel by parcel, followed by maturation in oak to integrate the wine’s tannins and add layers of spice and complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately one to two hours, particularly if opening the bottle now. Its firm structure and savoury depth make it an excellent match for roast beef, lamb, venison and other game dishes, as well as truffle-infused preparations, mushroom sauces and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in the early 19th century, Cos d’Estournel has become one of the landmark estates of the Médoc. It was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and is especially celebrated for its distinctive architecture, gravelly Saint-Estèphe terroir and powerful, long-lived wines. The estate remains one of the appellation’s most internationally recognised producers.
