Cos d’Estournel 2010 is a striking Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé that combines power, precision, and a distinctly exotic edge. From one of Bordeaux’s most admired estates, this vintage reflects the character of a superb Left Bank year, with depth, structure, and the ability to age gracefully for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet colour with impressive concentration at the core. The nose is layered and refined, offering dark cassis, blackberry, plum, cedar, graphite, violets, and subtle spice, with the estate’s signature hint of incense and oriental flair.
The palate is full-bodied and impeccably structured, with firm yet polished tannins supporting rich black fruit, tobacco, earthy minerality, and a long, persistent finish. It is already compelling, but the wine still has many years ahead of it and should continue to evolve beautifully over the next two decades or more.
Production
Produced in Saint-Estèphe on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Cos d’Estournel benefits from gravelly, well-drained soils that help produce grapes of great concentration and freshness. The estate’s vineyards are carefully tended and harvested parcel by parcel, allowing the team to pick each plot at optimal ripeness.
The wine is vinified with a focus on precision and balance, typically through careful fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels to build structure, complexity, and longevity while preserving the estate’s distinctive aromatic profile.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, duck breast, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for at least 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking now, especially to help the wine open up and soften its tannins.
Producer
Cos d’Estournel is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel. Known for its bold architectural style and highly distinctive wines, the château has long been regarded as a benchmark producer in Saint-Estèphe and a leading name in the Médoc. Its 2ème Grand Cru Classé status reflects both historical prestige and enduring quality.
