Description

Corsignano Imperatrice Chianti Selezione 2013 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from the rolling hills of Tuscany, crafted for those who appreciate depth, elegance and authenticity in their reds. This special selection captures the character of Chianti in a beautifully mature vintage, offering both immediate pleasure and contemplative complexity. Made by a sustainably minded, organically certified estate, it embodies a modern, conscientious approach rooted in classic Tuscan tradition.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Imperatrice shows a vibrant garnet core with brick-tinged rims, a tell-tale sign of graceful bottle age. Swirl it and you’ll see medium body with fine, lingering legs that hint at concentration without heaviness. The nose opens with classic Sangiovese aromas: sour cherry, dried red plum and wild strawberry, layered with notes of dried rose, leather, tobacco leaf and a gentle touch of underbrush. With air, more subtle nuances emerge – hints of cedar, sweet spices and a faint balsamic lift. On the palate, it is poised and finely structured, with bright yet integrated acidity keeping the fruit lively, and polished tannins giving shape and length. Flavours of red cherry, blood orange, dried herbs and a savoury, almost saline edge unfold gradually, leading to a long, persistent finish with echoes of spice and earth. The 2013 vintage is entering a beautiful drinking window now, with enough structure to hold for a few more years, but its balance and tertiary complexity suggest it is best enjoyed over the next 3–5 years for peak harmony.

Production
Sourced from estate vineyards in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti zone near Siena, Imperatrice Selezione reflects Corsignano’s organically farmed terroir of well-drained soils and sun-drenched hillsides cooled by evening breezes. Vines are cultivated with full respect for the environment, integrating Sangiovese and olive groves in a diversified ecosystem, and all work in the vineyard is guided by sustainable, certified organic practices. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. In the cellar, traditional Chianti methods meet modern precision: the Sangiovese is gently destemmed, fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aroma and freshness, then matured in wood to polish tannins and build complexity, before further bottle aging to allow the wine’s elegance and persistence to fully develop.

Food & Serving
This Chianti Selezione shines alongside classic Tuscan-inspired dishes: think pappardelle with wild boar ragù, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, roasted pork loin, or aged Pecorino and other hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risottos, tomato-based pasta, and wood-fired pizzas topped with cured meats. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight its balance of fruit and savoury notes. For a 2013 vintage, decanting for 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up, smoothing any remaining edges and allowing its layered bouquet to fully emerge.

Producer
Fattoria di Corsignano is an estate deeply rooted in the hills surrounding Siena, an area historically dedicated to fine wine production and the heartland of Chianti Classico. Certified organic since 2014, the winery embraces a holistic approach to agriculture, combining knowledge from past generations with contemporary organic practices and modern agronomic techniques. Vines and olive trees are cultivated side by side, and the estate is certified environmentally friendly and CO₂-free, powered entirely by its own solar energy system. Corsignano produces a focused range of quality wines – from Chianti Classico, Riserva and Gran Selezione to Rosso and Rosato Toscana, Vinsanto and Grappa – all noted for their elegance, drinkability and long, graceful finishes. Their wines are prized for their sociable, approachable nature and for the way they continue to evolve and reveal new layers in the glass, making Corsignano an important and respected voice in the Chianti Classico landscape.
