Description
Corsignano Chianti Riserva L’Imperatore 2018 is a refined, organically certified Chianti Classico Riserva that captures the depth and elegance of Sangiovese in the hills around Siena. Crafted in limited quantities, it offers a polished, ageworthy expression of Tuscany with a modern, sustainable touch. This Riserva draws on traditional Chianti craftsmanship while embracing contemporary organic farming and renewable energy, creating a wine that’s as conscientious as it is characterful.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L’Imperatore 2018 shows a deep, vibrant ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its development. The nose is layered and expressive, offering aromas of ripe red cherries, wild berries and plum, supported by notes of dried herbs, violets and a subtle floral lift from the Malvasia Nera. Underneath lie savory tones of leather, tobacco, sweet spices and a gentle touch of cedar and earth.
On the palate, this Chianti Riserva is elegant yet structured, with a medium to full body and finely etched tannins. Juicy cherry and red currant fruit are framed by hints of black tea, licorice, dried roses and a refreshing, mouthwatering acidity that is quintessentially Sangiovese. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of spice and mineral. Already harmonious now, the 2018 has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Corsignano’s vineyards lie in the heart of Chianti Classico near Siena, where galestro and alberese-rich soils, sunny exposures and marked diurnal temperature shifts give naturally aromatic, finely structured Sangiovese. Certified organic since 2014, the estate farms with deep respect for the land, integrating vines and olive groves and using only environmentally friendly practices powered by a solar energy system. Grapes for L’Imperatore are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then gently sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. After maceration on the skins to extract color, tannins and aroma, the wine is matured in oak (typically larger barrels and/or tonneaux) to refine its structure and add subtle spice, before further bottle aging to achieve the balance and complexity required for a Chianti Classico Riserva.
Food & Serving
This Riserva is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb, slow-cooked ragù with pappardelle, or roasted game birds with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, mushroom dishes, truffle-based plates and hearty vegetable stews rich in olive oil and herbs. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the bouquet to unfold. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving will help open the aromatic profile and soften the tannins, especially in its younger years.
