Contino Gran Reserva 1978 is a rare, mature Rioja from one of the region’s historic estate-bottled producers. As a Gran Reserva, it represents the traditional Rioja style of extended maturation in oak and bottle, offering collectors the opportunity to experience a wine shaped by more than four decades of evolution.
Tasting Notes
At this stage, the wine is likely to show a mature garnet to brick-red colour, potentially with considerable brick tones at the rim. The bouquet may reveal dried red berries, leather, tobacco, cedar, earthy spice and gentle savoury nuances, although the exact condition will depend on storage and provenance.
On the palate, expect a supple, evolved texture with mellow tannins and flavours of dried fruit, forest floor, vanilla, tobacco and spice. Mature wines of this age can vary considerably from bottle to bottle; when well preserved, it may offer notable complexity and a long, contemplative finish. It is best enjoyed now rather than cellared for extended future ageing.
Production
Contino is based in Rioja Alavesa, where vineyards benefit from the area’s elevated sites and a continental climate moderated by Atlantic influences. The 1978 vintage predates many modern technical records available today, so specific vineyard and vinification details cannot be confirmed. As a Gran Reserva Rioja, the wine would traditionally have undergone extended maturation in oak followed by prolonged bottle ageing before release.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Carefully decant shortly before serving to remove any sediment, but avoid prolonged aeration until the wine’s condition has been assessed, as very mature Rioja can be delicate. Pair it with roast lamb, game, braised beef, aged Manchego, mushroom dishes or other savoury preparations that complement its earthy, tertiary character.
Producer
Contino is a pioneering Rioja estate known for championing the single-estate approach in a region traditionally associated with large, blended merchant houses. Located near Laserna in Rioja Alavesa, the estate has played an important role in showcasing the character of its own vineyards while maintaining the classic Rioja tradition of long-aged wines. A 1978 Gran Reserva is a particularly historic expression of that tradition.
