Description
Condrieu Les Chaillées de l’Enfer by Georges Vernay is a standout expression of Viognier from one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered appellations. Sourced from some of Condrieu’s steep, terraced vineyards, it combines richness, perfume, and precision in a style that has helped define the region’s reputation for world-class white wine.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, it typically opens with an expressive bouquet of apricot, peach, white flowers, citrus zest, and subtle mineral notes. On the palate, Condrieu is usually lush and silky, with ripe stone fruit, honeysuckle, and a touch of spice balanced by refreshing acidity and a finely textured finish.
This cuvée is prized for its depth and aromatic intensity, but also for its ability to age gracefully over the medium term. With a few years in bottle, it can develop more complex notes of honey, dried fruit, and toasted nuances while retaining its elegance.
Production
Produced in the northern Rhône’s Condrieu appellation, where steep granite and decomposed schist slopes create ideal conditions for Viognier. The vineyards are known for their dramatic terraced sites, which demand careful hand-harvesting and meticulous selection of grapes. Vinification is typically carried out with a focus on preserving the grape’s natural aromatics and texture, often through controlled fermentation and careful élevage.
Food & Serving
Best served slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, this wine pairs beautifully with lobster, scallops, grilled turbot, creamy poultry dishes, and refined Asian cuisine with gentle spice. Decanting is not usually necessary, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if served young.
Producer
Georges Vernay is a historic and highly respected name in Condrieu, widely credited with helping revive the appellation and elevate Viognier to international acclaim. The estate has long been considered one of the benchmark producers of the northern Rhône, known for crafting wines of purity, finesse, and remarkable aromatic character.
