Description
Compagnie Des Indes Trinidad 13 Year Old is a powerful single cask–style rum bottled at a formidable 60.7% ABV, crafted for enthusiasts who appreciate authenticity and terroir-driven character. Sourced from selected Trinidadian distillates, it offers a pure expression of the island’s rum heritage, with no unnecessary embellishments. Inspired by the historic East India trading routes, Compagnie des Indes revives the tradition of seeking out rare barrels from distant origins and bottling them with their individuality intact.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Trinidad rum shows a deep amber hue with burnished copper highlights, hinting at its extended maturation in oak. The nose is complex and assertive, opening with notes of dark cane syrup, dried tropical fruits and toasted oak, supported by nuances of baking spices, citrus peel, tobacco leaf and a subtle medicinal, almost smoky edge typical of traditional Trinidad rums.
On the palate, the 60.7% ABV delivers an intense, full-bodied experience, yet the spirit remains remarkably balanced. Flavours of Demerara sugar, roasted banana, molasses and candied orange are layered with vanilla pod, nutmeg, leather and a touch of cocoa bitterness and peppery spice on the finish. A few drops of water reveal more fruit and polish the oak, extending the complexity. With 13 years of aging, it is beautifully evolved and ready to drink now, but well-stored bottles can continue to gain integration and nuance over the next several years.
Production
This rum is distilled in Trinidad, an island whose warm, humid Caribbean climate and maritime breezes accelerate maturation, concentrating flavour and structure. Compagnie des Indes focuses on carefully selected casks from quality distilleries, typically drawing on molasses-based rums distilled in traditional columns or pot stills, then aged for 13 years in oak barrels, often ex-bourbon, to impart spice, vanilla and gentle tannin. Harvested sugarcane is transformed into molasses and fermented before distillation, and the chosen barrels are matured until they display the desired balance of power, complexity and regional identity. Compagnie des Indes is known for minimal intervention in the cellar—often with little or no added sugar and careful proofing—to ensure the final rum reflects its true origin.
Food & Serving
This Trinidad 13 Year Old is best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to open up the aromatics; serve slightly below room temperature, around 18–20°C (64–68°F). Given its intensity, a short rest in the glass serves as a natural ‘decant’, but you can also pour it into a small spirits glass 10–15 minutes before tasting. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate (70–85% cacao), roasted nuts, caramel desserts, spiced ginger cake, or a high-quality cigar. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses or after a rich meal as a contemplative sipping rum.
Producer
Compagnie des Indes is a French independent bottler founded with the aim of showcasing the diversity and authenticity of rum from around the world, much like the historic East India Company once did with rare goods from distant ports. Rather than producing rum themselves, they meticulously select standout casks and distinctive blends from key rum-producing countries, including Trinidad, Jamaica, Guadeloupe and beyond. Their philosophy prioritises transparency, origin and character, often favouring single casks or small-batch bottlings with limited or no additives. In a market dominated by heavily doctored rums, Compagnie des Indes has earned a strong reputation among connoisseurs for championing terroir-driven styles and bottling rums that speak clearly of their place of origin.
