Description
Comando G’s La Breña 1er 2022 is a feather‑light yet intensely characterful Garnacha from the granitic slopes of the Sierra de Gredos in Vinos de Madrid. Classified as a Vino de Paraje, it focuses not on a single plot name but on a precise place expression, delivering a wine that is perfumed, mineral and strikingly elegant. Returning after a missed 2021 vintage, this 2022 bottling shows the finesse and tension that have made Comando G one of Spain’s most exciting modern producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Breña 1er 2022 is pale, translucent ruby with a brightness that hints at its delicacy and freshness. The nose is lifted and aromatic, pouring out wild red berries, mountain strawberries and red currants alongside rose petal, fresh herbs, blood orange zest and a fine dusting of warm granite and white pepper. There’s a distinct sense of high-altitude air and stony minerality right from the first swirl.
On the palate, the wine is narrow and focused, almost Burgundian in its line, with ultra-fine, powdery tannins derived from its granitic soils. Sleek red fruit, pomegranate and cherry skin are wrapped around a core of saline, mineral tension that leaves a subtle, almost salty twist on the finish. Despite the warm region, it feels incredibly fresh and crisp, with vivid acidity and low extraction keeping it weightless yet intense. The finish is long, savory and mouthwatering, encouraging another sip. Enjoyable now for its precision and perfume, it should develop additional complexity and savory nuance over the next 8–12 years.
Production
La Breña 1er is sourced from high‑altitude vineyards in the Villanueva area of the Sierra de Gredos, where old-vine Garnacha clings to poor, sandy granitic soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The climate is continental with significant diurnal swings, preserving acidity and aromatic lift even in warmer years. Comando G farm using organic and largely biodynamic principles, harvesting by hand in small boxes to protect the delicate bunches. In the cellar, whole or mostly whole clusters are gently fermented with native yeasts, with very soft extraction to maintain finesse rather than power. Aging typically takes place in large, neutral oak foudres or older barrels, allowing the wine’s mineral character and purity of fruit to shine without overt wood influence, before bottling with minimal intervention in May 2024.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food‑friendly red that excels with dishes that mirror its finesse rather than overpower it. Think roast chicken with herbs, grilled quail, duck breast with cherries, or charcuterie and fine cured hams. It also pairs beautifully with earthy plates like mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables, and Mediterranean fare featuring tomatoes, olive oil and fresh herbs; even richer tuna or salmon preparations can work well given its freshness and subtle grip. Serve at a cool cellar temperature of about 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and mineral edge. A light decant of 30–45 minutes helps the perfume open up, especially in its youth, but avoid overly long decanting to preserve its delicate, high‑tone character.
Producer
Comando G is the collaborative project of Dani Landi and Fernando García, two winemakers who have become standard‑bearers for a new, terroir‑driven vision of Spanish Garnacha. Founded in the late 2000s, the estate focuses on old, high‑altitude vineyards in the rugged Sierra de Gredos, west of Madrid, where granite, altitude and ancient bush vines combine to give wines of remarkable finesse and energy. Their work has been instrumental in putting Vinos de Madrid and Gredos firmly on the map for world‑class, site‑specific Garnacha, often drawing comparisons to top Burgundy and the Northern Rhône for their transparency and elegance. With numerous high scores and critical acclaim, Comando G is now widely regarded as one of Spain’s most important and influential artisanal wine producers.
