Description
Colterenzio Lagrein Mantsch Riserva 2023 is a bold yet finely tuned Alpine red from Alto Adige, showing the variety’s signature depth, dark fruit character, and mountain freshness. Made by one of South Tyrol’s most respected co-operatives, it combines regional identity with a polished Riserva style that gives the wine both structure and elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet hue, often with a dense, almost inky core. The nose leans toward black cherry, blackberry, plum skin, violets, and subtle spice, with hints of cocoa, earth, and a savoury mineral edge.
On the palate, Lagrein is known for its generous fruit, firm but ripe tannins, and lively acidity, and this Riserva style should add extra concentration and nuance. Expect a full-bodied red with a dark, juicy profile balanced by freshness and a slightly rustic, alpine grip. It has good ageing potential and should develop more complexity over the next several years.
Production
Lagrein is one of Alto Adige’s classic native grapes, thriving in the warm days and cool nights of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, where alluvial and porphyritic soils help preserve freshness and depth. The Mantsch Riserva comes from carefully selected vineyards and is produced with a focus on quality and ripe fruit expression, typically involving controlled fermentation and ageing in oak to refine the tannins and add complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful dishes such as roasted red meats, game, braised beef, and lamb, as well as mushroom risotto and aged hard cheeses. Serve it slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes to let its aromatic depth and tannins open up.
Producer
Colterenzio, founded in 1960 in Appiano/Eppan in South Tyrol, has become one of the region’s leading wineries and a benchmark for high-quality alpine wines. Built on a strong cooperative model and a focus on vineyard expression, the estate is especially well known for producing precise, terroir-driven wines that showcase both local and international varieties with clarity and finesse.
