Description

Collina dei Ciliegi Amarone della Valpolicella 2020 is a rich, modern expression of one of Veneto’s most iconic wines. Crafted from carefully selected Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes, it delivers the opulence and depth Amarone lovers seek, while retaining an elegant, food‑friendly balance. This vintage showcases the historic appassimento tradition of Valpolicella—drying grapes to concentrate flavour—interpreted with a contemporary sense of precision and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Amarone shows a deep, garnet‑ruby colour with a dense core and subtle brick reflections at the rim. The nose is generous and layered, offering aromas of ripe dark cherries, dried plum, macerated berries and fig, intertwined with notes of cocoa, sweet spices, licorice, tobacco leaf and a hint of dried rose and almond. On the palate, it is full‑bodied and velvety, with a rich concentration of fruit balanced by fresh acidity and well‑woven tannins. Flavours of black cherry compote, dried cranberry and baked plum are lifted by nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla, cloves and a touch of balsamic herb. The finish is long, warming and slightly savoury, with lingering notes of spice and dried fruit. While already approachable with some aeration, the 2020 vintage has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, developing more tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and forest floor with careful cellaring.

Production
La Collina dei Ciliegi sources grapes for its Amarone della Valpolicella from hillside vineyards in Veneto, where the combination of calcareous and clay-limestone soils, good drainage and significant diurnal temperature swings helps build aromatics and preserve acidity. The Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella are harvested by hand, selecting only the healthiest bunches, which are then laid out in ventilated lofts to dry (appassimento) for several months, concentrating sugars, flavours and tannins. After gentle pressing, fermentation proceeds slowly at controlled temperatures to handle the high potential alcohol and extract fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then matured in oak—often a mix of large casks and smaller barrels—to add complexity, soften the structure and integrate the rich fruit before bottling and further refinement in the cellar.

Food & Serving
This Amarone is a natural partner for robust, flavourful dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, venison, slow‑cooked lamb shanks or rich stews, as well as aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano‑Reggiano or Grana Padano. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom risotto and dark chocolate desserts for an indulgent finish to the meal. Serve at 16–18°C; in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to let the aromas unfurl and the tannins relax. Use large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses to fully appreciate the wine’s aromatic complexity and texture.

Producer
La Collina dei Ciliegi is a quality‑driven producer based in the hills of Verona, in the heart of Valpolicella, where viticulture has thrived since Roman times. Originally a small family estate, it has grown into a respected name for modern yet terroir‑expressive wines, with a particular focus on the classic varieties and styles of the region, including Amarone, Ripasso and Valpolicella Superiore. The winery’s elevated vineyard sites and attention to detail in the appassimento process have earned it a reputation for Amarone wines that are both sumptuous and balanced, helping showcase the potential of Valpolicella’s hillside terroirs to wine lovers in Italy and abroad.
