Colgin IX Estate Syrah 2015

Colgin IX Estate Syrah 2015 is a remarkable single-vineyard wine from one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated estates. Planted on the heights of Pritchard Hill with top Rhône-inspired Syrah clones, it brings together the power of California sunshine with the perfume and structure of great Northern Rhône Syrah.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in the glass, this Syrah immediately signals richness and concentration. The nose is intense and layered, opening with crushed black cherries, black plums and mulberries, then unfolding into black pepper, violets, orange blossom, smoked meat, pencil lead, chocolate, star anise and sandalwood. On the palate, it is full-bodied, richly textured and deeply concentrated, with generous black-fruited depth, peppery spice and a velvety, almost seductive mouthfeel. The wine finishes long and persistent, with both power and finesse. Beautiful now, it also has the structure and balance to age gracefully for another decade or more.

Production
The grapes come from Colgin’s IX Estate on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, a high-elevation site overlooking Lake Hennessey. The vineyard’s exposed mountain setting and carefully managed blocks give the wine remarkable intensity, precision and aromatic lift. The Syrah is sourced from elite clones originating in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, reflecting Ann Colgin’s admiration for the great wines of the Rhône. Winemaker Allison Tauziet ferments the fruit at around 20°C before aging the wine for two years in entirely new French oak barrels. The result is a polished, deeply expressive Syrah with plenty of structure and remarkable complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as grilled lamb, rosemary roasted game, duck breast, beef tenderloin or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with smoked meats, black olive dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the aromatics and layered palate fully open.
