Description

Colgin Cariad 2016 is one of Napa Valley’s great Bordeaux-inspired blends, sourced from the legendary David Abreu vineyards and crafted by winemaker Allison Tauziet. Named after the Welsh word for love, it combines remarkable power, precision, and finesse in a style that has made Colgin one of the most admired names in fine wine.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in the glass, the wine opens with an intense and layered bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, cocoa, tar, licorice, violet, cedar, and graphite. On the palate it is full-bodied and beautifully structured, with concentrated dark fruit, remarkable purity, firm yet polished tannins, and a long, mineral-driven finish that seems to linger for minutes. This is a wine built for the long haul and should continue to evolve gracefully for 25–30 years or more.

Production
Cariad is a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend made from fruit grown on David Abreu’s prized vineyard sites, where mineral-rich volcanic soils, generous sunshine, and cool nights help produce fruit of both ripeness and freshness. The 2016 blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot; after fermentation, it was matured for two years in 100% new French oak barrels to add depth, structure, and complexity.

Food & Serving
Best served with rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or lamb with herbs. Serve at 16–18°C and, if possible, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open up, especially if drinking young.

Producer
Colgin Cellars was founded by Ann Colgin in 1992 and has since become one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated cult estates, known for producing wines of extraordinary quality, elegance, and consistency. The winery’s reputation was cemented early by critical acclaim, and in 2017 it became the only American estate named a strategic partner in the LVMH group and a member of Vins d’Exception alongside icons such as Château d’Yquem and Château Cheval Blanc.
