Description
Colgin Cariad 2014 is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic cult wines, showcasing how elegant and complex a Bordeaux-style blend from California can be. Named after the Welsh word for “love,” it reflects the harmony of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in a wine of remarkable depth, finesse, and pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, intense color with layered aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, dark cherry, violet, cedar, graphite, and exotic spice. The palate is concentrated yet velvety, with impeccably integrated tannins, impressive depth, and a long, resonant finish. Dark fruit, floral nuances, and a subtle mineral freshness give it a rare balance of power and elegance.
This is a wine built for long aging. Its structure, concentration, and refinement suggest a graceful evolution over decades, rewarding patience with added complexity and nuance.
Production
The fruit comes from some of Colgin Cellars’ most exclusive vineyards on the sun-drenched slopes around St. Helena in Napa Valley. Volcanic soils, cooling breezes, and excellent sun exposure help produce fruit with richness, freshness, and a pronounced mineral edge. The blend is crafted from carefully selected Bordeaux varieties and vinified to preserve purity, texture, and precision.
Food & Serving
Serve with richly flavored dishes such as prime rib, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. A serving temperature of 16–18°C is ideal, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its complexity.
Producer
Colgin Cellars was founded in Napa Valley and has become one of the region’s most revered names, known for producing highly sought-after wines with exceptional quality and limited availability. Since the first Cariad vintage in 1999, the wine has earned cult status among collectors and critics alike, with numerous vintages receiving top international acclaim.
