Description

Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino 2016 is a benchmark expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most historic estates. From an exceptional vintage in Montalcino, this red marries classic structure with remarkable finesse and purity of fruit. It’s a Brunello that speaks clearly of its origin: elegant, age-worthy and unmistakably traditional. The 2016 stands out for its balance of ripe, red fruit and savory complexity, framed by fine, persistent tannins. Crafted in a resolutely classic style and aged extensively, it offers the depth and longevity serious Brunello collectors look for. Col d’Orcia, whose name means “hill overlooking the Orcia River,” has been a key player in the region’s rise to global fame, helping shape the identity of Brunello di Montalcino as one of Italy’s most important wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino 2016 shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections emerging toward the rim—already hinting at its evolution while retaining youthful vibrancy. On the nose, it is complex and layered: ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and dried raspberry interlace with notes of dried rose, violet, sweet tobacco, cedar and a touch of leather. Subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs, licorice, spice box and underbrush add depth as the wine opens in the glass. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a refined, linear structure. Juicy red and black cherry fruit leads, supported by fresh acidity that keeps everything precise and lifted. Fine-grained yet firm tannins provide a classical Brunello backbone, balanced by flavors of plum, orange zest, savory herbs and earthy spice. The finish is long, persistent and slightly saline, with lingering notes of red fruit, tea leaves and subtle balsamic tones. 2016 is widely regarded as an outstanding, long-lived vintage in Montalcino, and this wine has excellent aging potential. While approachable now with proper aeration, it will continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary notes—leather, dried porcini, truffle, and tobacco—over the next 10–20 years, and likely beyond in ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
Col d'Orcia’s vineyards lie on the southern slopes of Montalcino, an area known for its sunny exposure, steady breezes and significant day–night temperature swings. The soils here are a mix of clay, limestone and marl with stony components, which naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s structure, minerality and aromatic clarity. The Sangiovese (locally known as Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello) is typically harvested by hand, allowing careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, the must is fermented in temperature-controlled tanks, with maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic compounds in a measured, traditional manner. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak casks—often complemented by some French oak—over several years, followed by additional bottle aging before release, in accordance with Brunello di Montalcino regulations. This long, patient élevage helps polish tannins and integrate flavors, giving the finished wine its harmonious, classically structured profile.

Food & Serving
This Brunello shines alongside richly flavored, savory dishes. Think Tuscan-inspired cuisine: bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled or roast lamb, braised beef, game birds or wild boar ragù over pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, mushroom-based dishes, and truffle-infused preparations that echo the wine’s earthy undertones. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended for bottles opened in the near term, both to soften the tannins and to encourage the aromatic complexity that a great 2016 Brunello has to offer.

Producer
Col d'Orcia is one of the historic estates of Montalcino, with roots in viticulture that stretch back several centuries and a modern reputation forged as Brunello di Montalcino rose to international prominence. Situated on the southwestern slopes of the appellation, the estate has long championed a traditional style of Brunello that emphasizes terroir, balance and longevity over short-term impact. Col d'Orcia has been a key ambassador for the region, both through its commitment to sustainable and, more recently, organic practices across its extensive vineyards, and through a consistent track record of critically acclaimed vintages. Today, it stands as one of the largest certified organic estates in Tuscany and a reference point for classic, cellar-worthy Brunello that faithfully expresses the character of Sangiovese in Montalcino.
