Description

Clusel-Roch Côte Rôtie 2023 is a Syrah with Viognier from the Rhône with dark berries, granite bite, and the domaine’s fine smoky edge and violet lift. It has the savoury streak that makes Clusel-Roch feel clearly Ampuis. The fruit is ripe and dark. The frame stays fine.

About the Wine
Clusel-Roch Côte Rôtie 2023 comes from biodynamically farmed Syrah with a small share of Viognier on the steep northern Rhône slopes around Ampuis. The site mix in this bottle is tied to granite and schist, and that stony feel is already clear in the dry grip. The 2023 fruit leans into blackberry, raspberry and plum, with a floral thread from Viognier that sits high above the darker Syrah core. There is a faint ferrous edge here that feels very Clusel-Roch, especially once the wine has had a little air. In the cellar, the wine is aged in used French oak barrels, and the wood marks the edges through spice and texture. The barrel tone lands as tea leaf, cured meat and old cedar, tucked closely into the fruit. The dry profile keeps the palate clear and savoury from the first sip. Light tannins give the wine shape rather than bulk. A faint farmyard note sits behind raspberry skin after a few minutes in the glass.

Tasting Notes
The first pour smells of blackberry, damson plum and warm stone with a meaty Côte Rôtie note that feels close to cured beef, peppered fat and iron near the finish. Air brings raspberry skin, violet petal and a faint barnyard edge that sits inside the Clusel-Roch smoky register after ten minutes in a large glass and lingers with plum skin. The palate is dry and supple, with ripe wild berry fruit spread across light tannins and a grainy granite feel that grips the sides of the tongue after each swallow. Used French oak adds tea leaf and old cigar box with a little clove, and the 14% alcohol settles into dark fruit, savoury spice and a warm finish in the empty glass. Drink 2025-2030.

Food Pairing
Pour this with grilled rib-eye or rosemary lamb chops, especially if the meat has a charred edge and a little black pepper. The wine's blackberry and plum fill the meat juices, and its light tannins leave room for pink centres and herb butter. For a regional plate, serve saucisson de Lyon with cornichons and a slice of pâté en croûte. That cured-meat note in the Clusel-Roch Côte Rôtie 2023 picks up the Rhône’s rustic side in a very direct way. Saint-Marcellin or a young Saint-Félicien also fits the bottle, especially when the cheese is soft enough to catch the wine’s pepper and raspberry skin.

Producer
Clusel-Roch is rooted in Ampuis, and its most telling trait is the way the family treats Côte Rôtie as a set of steep hillside voices with fine differences in fruit, smoke and tannin from one cuvée to the next. Gilbert Clusel and Brigitte Roch built the domaine name from their two surnames, and the next generation has kept attention on farming choices that show clearly in the texture of the wines in recent releases. That attention is easy to spot in this 2023, where biodynamic farming meets granite and schist with a dark-fruited Syrah profile and a small Viognier lift that feels woven into the aromas after air. The domaine also bottles wines outside the Côte Rôtie headline, including Coteaux du Lyonnais, and its cellar sits close to both northern Rhône Syrah and nearby Gamay country. In this Côte Rôtie, used oak frames the fruit through spice and calm texture, and the 2023 carries that detail through tea leaf, old cedar and a faint cigar box note. The producer's signature here is a savoury accent that feels fully part of the fruit, with raspberry brightness, plum depth, a meaty northern Rhône undertone and pepper all moving through the same narrow channel.
