Description

Clusel-Roch Le Champon Côte Rôtie 2022 is a Syrah from Rhône on granite and schist with blackberry and violet, smoky oak depth and a dry organic 13% profile. Le Champon carries the estate’s fragrant Côte Rôtie side with blackberry, blueberry and a thread of violet. The 18 months in French oak give the 2022 a smooth smoky frame. The dry 13% body keeps the anise note clear through the finish.

About the Wine
The vineyard story of Clusel-Roch Le Champon Côte Rôtie 2022 starts with organically farmed Syrah on granite and schist. Côte Rôtie’s slopes above the Rhône make vineyard work slow, and Le Champon comes from a producer that has chosen organic farming for this demanding setting. The 2022 fruit profile is dark and berry-led, with blackberry and blueberry placed ahead of red cherry. The bottle lands at 13% alcohol. That moderate figure matches the wine’s fragrant side, especially the violet note that sits above the darker fruit. In the cellar, Clusel-Roch gives Le Champon 18 months in French oak barrels. The mix of new and used wood matters in the way the oak reads. It shows as smoke, polished grip and a quiet toasted edge around the fruit. The wine is dry, and the élevage leaves the blueberry core rounded with anise at the edge. Violet leads the final aroma, followed by blackberry skin and smoked anise.

Tasting Notes
Blackberry and blueberry arrive in a broad dark wave, with the 2022 Le Champon showing ripe fruit and a cool northern Rhône scent from the first swirl. Violet sits high above the fruit and anise brings a liquorice tone that stays clear through the smoky oak. Smoke comes through as charred herb and warm barrel spice, and the 18 months in French oak leave a rounded grip on the mid-palate. The palate is dry and polished at 13% alcohol, carrying blackberry skin, balsamic depth and a fine bitter edge on the finish. Drink 2025-2035.

Food Pairing
Pour Clusel-Roch Le Champon Côte Rôtie 2022 with a peppered côte de boeuf or rare ribeye, especially if the meat has a hard sear and a spoon of roasting juices. The wine’s blackberry and smoke lean into charred edges, and its anise note finds a good echo in rosemary or juniper. For game, choose venison loin with blackberry sauce or a slow civet de sanglier with mushrooms and lardons. For a regional Rhône-Alpes plate, bring out aged Saint-Marcellin, saucisson brioché from Lyon and a small gratin dauphinois with plenty of browned cream. Aged Comté or a mature tomme brings out the wine’s violet scent and its fine bitter snap.

Producer
Clusel-Roch is a family domaine in Ampuis, and its most concrete signature is the decision to farm Côte Rôtie organically on terraces where tractors and shortcuts have little room in the northern Rhône. The estate name joins the Clusel and Roch families, and that double name still feels present in the quiet hands-on scale of the wines from vineyard work to élevage. Brigitte Roch and Gilbert Clusel are closely associated with the modern domaine, and Guillaume Clusel adds another generation across Côte Rôtie and the family’s Coteaux du Lyonnais vineyards, including Gamay country near Lyon. That range is a useful clue: the same producer known for Syrah from Ampuis also bottles Gamay from the hills near Lyon, so perfume and fresh fruit are part of the house language. Le Champon turns that language darker with blackberry, violet and smoked anise after 18 months in French oak barrels, a detail that sets this bottle apart inside the current range of Côte Rôtie. Clusel-Roch’s best bottles have a personal feel from this farming scale, and the 2022 Le Champon carries that feel in its polished fruit, dry 13% frame and firm granite-schist edge across a long finish that smells of cool violet and smoke.
