Cloudy Bay Te Wahi 2021

Cloudy Bay Te Wāhi 2021 is a deeply expressive Pinot Noir that captures the tension and harmony of Central Otago’s dramatic landscape. Named Te Wāhi, meaning “the place” in te reo Māori, it reflects two contrasting terroirs coming together in a wine of poise, depth and identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark, alluring core of boysenberry, ripe plum and juicy cherry, lifted by hints of dark chocolate, kirsch and a cool flicker of fresh mint. Subtle spice and forest floor notes add earthy complexity and a sensual, near-smoky depth. The palate is bright, precise and beautifully layered, with vibrant acidity bringing clarity to the dark fruit. Damson plum, black stone fruit and cool coffee nuances unfold over silken tannins, leading to a long, elegant finish with dark, minty freshness. Te Wāhi 2021 has excellent aging potential and should develop gracefully over the next decade.

Production
Te Wāhi is made from two contrasting parcels: Northburn, with steep, stony glacial soils that bring structure and intensity, and Calvert in Bannockburn, where old lake-bed soils contribute more fragrant, generous fruit. Cloudy Bay’s winemaking aims to preserve and highlight this duality through a gentle, restrained approach that frames the fruit without obscuring the character of the sites.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for lamb, game, mushrooms and richly flavoured winter dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 30–60 minutes if serving young to allow the wine to open fully.
