Cloudy Bay Te Koko is a distinctive Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that shows the region’s precision through a richer, more textured style. Fermented with wild yeasts and shaped by time in French oak, it stands apart from the fresher, more typical expressions of Sauvignon Blanc and reflects Cloudy Bay’s long-standing role in defining New Zealand fine wine.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, Te Koko 2023 opens with layered aromas of citrus peel, white peach, nectarine, toasted brioche, and subtle herbal notes. Hints of vanilla, wet stone, and smoke add complexity and depth.
On the palate, it is broad and creamy yet still beautifully focused, combining ripe stone fruit, lemon curd, and grapefruit with a saline, mineral edge. The oak is integrated rather than dominant, lending texture and length. This wine has the structure and balance to age gracefully for several years, gaining extra savory complexity with time.
Production
Sourced from selected Marlborough vineyards, Te Koko captures the region’s maritime climate, cool nights, and free-draining soils that help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. The fruit is harvested to retain purity and then fermented with indigenous yeasts, including barrel fermentation in French oak, which adds complexity and a fuller mouthfeel. Extended lees contact contributes to the wine’s layered texture and refined finish.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at around 10–12°C. Te Koko pairs especially well with rich seafood dishes such as scallops, lobster, crab, or roasted fish, as well as dishes with cream, herbs, or subtle spice. It also works beautifully with poultry, risotto, or soft, creamy cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a short period in the glass will allow its aromatics to open up.
Producer
Cloudy Bay is one of New Zealand’s most iconic wine producers and played a major role in bringing Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to international attention. Founded in 1985, the estate quickly became a benchmark for quality and helped shape the reputation of New Zealand wine on the world stage. Today, Cloudy Bay remains highly respected for its precision, elegance, and consistent pursuit of expressive, site-driven wines.
