Clos Saint-Jean Sanctus Sanctorum 2009 is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most exclusive Grenache cuvées, produced only in exceptional vintages from the estate’s oldest vines on La Crau. Made in tiny quantities, it captures the power, purity, and historic character that have made this single-varietal expression so sought after.

Tasting Notes
Deep and opaque in the glass, this 2009 shows the richness you expect from a great southern Rhône vintage. The nose opens with dark cherry, blackberry, liquorice, warm spice, and a marked stony mineral edge, while the palate is dense, creamy, and full-bodied, yet lifted by a fresh core that keeps the wine poised. The tannins are ripe and velvety, giving the wine a polished feel despite its sheer intensity. The finish is exceptionally long and layered, and while it is already beautifully evolved, it still has plenty of cellaring potential ahead.

Production
The grapes come exclusively from extremely old Grenache vines planted on the hottest, rockiest parcels of La Crau, where the stony soils and southern exposure contribute concentration and depth. The fruit is carefully hand-selected cluster by cluster, then vinified traditionally in concrete to preserve freshness and precision. Aging takes place mainly in large neutral casks so the pure Grenache character remains at the forefront.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavoured dishes such as roasted lamb, beef fillet, game, braised short ribs, or truffle-infused cuisine. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if the bottle has been resting in cellar for some time.
