Description
Clos Saint-Jean Deus Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010 in double magnum is a commanding expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated appellations. Made from old-vine Grenache with Mourvèdre and Syrah, it combines richness, structure, and remarkable freshness, while the 3-liter format makes it especially appealing for long aging and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 vintage is deep, dark, and intensely colored, with a concentrated core that hints at its power. The nose opens with ripe black and red berries, liquorice, dried Provencal herbs, and a distinct mineral edge, while Mourvèdre adds depth, a subtle sauvage character, and a touch of earthy complexity.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with dense yet balanced fruit, firm but ripe tannins, and impressive length. The wine feels powerful without losing precision, and the large format helps preserve its youthful energy. It has excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve beautifully over many years, gaining nuance and complexity.
Production
The grapes come from old Grenache vines on the warm, stony soils around La Crau, paired with Mourvèdre from deeper, cooler parcels that bring structure and length. Grenache is vinified in concrete to preserve its pure, expressive fruit, while Mourvèdre undergoes more tannic extraction and partial maturation in wood. The final blend is then aged in a thoughtful mix of stainless steel and large oak casks, allowing the wine’s natural power to be refined without overpowering oak influence.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal wine for rich dishes such as lamb shoulder, beef daube, game, slow-roasted meats, or truffle-infused cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and Provençal-inspired dishes with herbs and garlic. Serve at around 16–18°C, and while decanting is recommended to open the wine’s aromatics and soften the tannins, a younger bottle may benefit from a longer decant.
