Description

Clos Saint-Jean Deus Ex Machina 2009 is a powerful and highly expressive Châteauneuf-du-Pape, built from old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre from some of the appellation’s most prized parcels. It captures the generosity of a great Rhône vintage while retaining the precision and mineral depth that make this cuvée stand out.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2009 shows a deep, intense ruby-garnet color with a warm, polished core. The nose opens with layers of ripe blackberries, cherry liqueur, dried herbs, liquorice, and a distinct stony, sunbaked character that reflects its terroir. The palate is dense, creamy, and richly textured, with ripe, rounded tannins and abundant dark fruit carried by notes of thyme, spice, and earthy minerality. Despite its power and volume, the wine remains balanced and energetic, and it is now in a very generous drinking window while still holding the structure to develop further complexity over time.

Production
Deus Ex Machina is sourced from old Grenache vines on the warm, stony La Crau sector, complemented by Mourvèdre from deeper, cooler soils that bring backbone and darker dimension. Grenache is vinified in concrete to preserve its ripe fruit purity, while Mourvèdre typically sees a more extractive fermentation and partial aging in oak, followed by maturation in a mix of stainless steel tanks and large-format casks for balance and finesse.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for slow-roasted lamb, game, beef cheek, duck confit, or rich Provençal dishes with herbs and olives. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and supple texture to fully unfold.

Producer
Clos Saint-Jean is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most respected producers, known for crafting concentrated, terroir-driven wines from exceptional old vines and prime vineyard sites. The estate has earned an outstanding reputation for both quality and consistency, with Deus Ex Machina standing as one of its most celebrated cuvées.
