Clos Saint-Jean’s Deus Ex Machina is a distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape built on old-vine Grenache from the legendary La Crau terroir, with Mourvèdre adding depth and Syrah lending aromatic lift. Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, mature ruby color with hints of garnet at the rim. The nose is complex and layered, with concentrated cherry and dark berry fruit unfolding alongside dried herbs, liquorice, and a subtle savoury, animal edge. On the palate, it is firmer and more classical in style, with a straighter line of acidity and still-lively tannins that give the wine real structure. The fruit is now more integrated, offering a balanced, energetic finish and excellent drinking today, while still retaining enough depth to continue evolving gracefully for some time.

Production
The fruit comes from some of the estate’s most iconic parcels on La Crau, where ancient Grenache vines produce low-yielding, concentrated fruit, while Mourvèdre from cooler, deeper soils contributes backbone and length. The vintage was a classic, even one, and vinification followed Clos Saint-Jean’s restrained, traditional approach: gentle fermentation in concrete, followed by ageing in foudres and barriques to preserve purity, texture, and structure.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, game birds, braised beef, truffle dishes, and richly flavoured Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the mature aromatics and structure to open fully.
