Description
Clos Saint-Jean Deus Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2004 Magnum is a beautifully mature expression of one of the Rhône’s most respected cuvées. Built from very old Grenache and Mourvèdre sourced from classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape sites, it combines depth, finesse, and the generous character that has made the appellation famous.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2004 vintage shows a graceful, evolved profile with a deep garnet core and softened edges. Aromas of dark cherries, dried herbs, leather, liquorice, and warm spice unfold with time, while subtle earthy and animal notes add complexity.
The palate is supple and rounded, with ripe fruit now giving way to a more savoury, harmonious expression. Mourvèdre still provides structure and length, supporting a long, gently warming finish. This magnum has entered a fully mature phase, but it retains impressive energy and should continue to hold well for near-term enjoyment.
Production
Deus Ex Machina is made from old-vine Grenache grown on the hot, stony parcels around La Crau, alongside Mourvèdre from deeper, cooler soils that contribute backbone and persistence. Grenache is traditionally fermented in concrete to preserve purity, while Mourvèdre is vinified with greater extraction and partially aged in wood. The final cuvée matures in a balanced mix of stainless steel and larger casks, helping maintain freshness and precision in this classic 2004 vintage.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs naturally with roast lamb, game birds, beef slow-cooked with herbs, or rich Provençal dishes such as daube or ratatouille with grilled meats. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow its mature aromas and savoury complexity to open fully.
Producer
Clos Saint-Jean is a highly regarded family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for crafting powerful yet polished wines that reflect the character of the southern Rhône. The domaine has earned a strong reputation for precision, concentration, and site expression, particularly through its top cuvées such as Deus Ex Machina. Today it stands among the appellation’s most admired producers.
