Description
Clos Fourtet Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2003 is a superb example of one of Bordeaux’s most admired Right Bank estates, showing the depth and finesse that have made the property a benchmark in Saint-Émilion. From a vintage now entering full maturity, this Premier Grand Cru Classé combines power, purity, and a signature chalky mineral character that sets it apart.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an inky, purple-black core that still hints at its concentration and remarkable vitality. The bouquet opens with layers of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, and violet, followed by a pronounced chalky minerality that gives the wine an unmistakable Saint-Émilion identity.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and voluptuously textured, with a seamless, multidimensional structure and impressive freshness for the vintage. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, and the wine is at a beautiful stage now, though it still has the concentration and balance to continue evolving over the coming years.
Production
Clos Fourtet is located in Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay-limestone soils contribute to the estate’s finely chiseled mineral profile and natural depth. The 2003 vintage was notably warm, giving the Merlot-based blend generous ripeness and richness, while careful vineyard selection and precise winemaking preserved the wine’s balance and purity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if opened now, especially to allow the aromatics and texture to fully раскрыte.
Producer
Clos Fourtet is one of Saint-Émilion’s historic estates and holds Premier Grand Cru Classé status, reflecting its long-standing importance in the appellation. Known for producing refined, age-worthy wines with a distinctive limestone signature, the estate has earned an excellent reputation among collectors and critics alike, with standout wines such as the 2003 vintage reinforcing its elite standing in Bordeaux.
