Description
Clos Fourtet is one of Saint-Émilion’s standout First Growth estates, offering a wine that combines elegance, depth, and remarkable precision. Known for its limestone-influenced finesse and pure expression of Merlot-led Bordeaux, this is a wine that reflects both prestige and place. The 2021 vintage captures the estate’s classic style with freshness, detail, and poised structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos Fourtet 2021 typically shows a deep ruby color with youthful violet hints. The nose is refined and layered, opening with black cherry, plum, and blackberry, followed by floral accents, graphite, cedar, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a mineral-driven core that gives the wine a polished, energetic feel.
The finish is long and elegant, with lingering dark fruit, savory notes, and a touch of limestone salinity. While approachable with careful cellaring, this wine is built for development and should gain complexity over the next decade or more. Its structure and balance suggest very good aging potential.
Production
Clos Fourtet’s vineyards sit on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, a terroir prized for drainage, freshness, and the ability to produce wines with tension and minerality. The estate is traditionally planted mainly to Merlot, with supporting Cabernet Franc, and grapes are harvested selectively to ensure optimal ripeness. Vinification is carried out with precision to preserve fruit purity and site expression, followed by aging in oak barrels to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural finesse.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or dishes with mushrooms and truffle. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, as this will help the wine reveal its aromatics and soften its structure.
Producer
Clos Fourtet is a historic Saint-Émilion estate with a reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most refined and age-worthy wines.
