Description
Clos du Mont-Olivet’s La Cuvée du Papet 2010 is a deeply expressive Châteauneuf-du-Pape built from old-vine Grenache and shaped by the estate’s historic sites in Mont Olivet and Bois Dauphin. It combines the power and generosity of the vintage with remarkable precision, and it comes from one of the village’s long-established family properties, where estate bottling has been part of the story for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an extraordinarily deep plum-purple color. The nose is richly layered and intensely Provençal, with aromas of balsam wood, raspberries, blackcurrants, lavender, garrigue, kirsch, licorice, and a touch of underbrush.
The palate is full-bodied and expansive, with impressive concentration, ripe fruit, and a dense, structured core. Despite its power, the wine remains focused and detailed, and while it can be approached now, it has the balance and depth to age gracefully for many years—likely two decades or more under the right conditions.
Production
La Cuvée du Papet 2010 is made primarily from old-vine Grenache, supported by Mourvèdre and Syrah, sourced from some of the estate’s oldest vines, between 50 and 105 years old. The vineyards are spread across the Châteauneuf-du-Pape commune, including prized parcels in Mont Olivet and Bois Dauphin, where the varied soils help build complexity and structure. The wine is aged in foudres, a traditional large-format vessel that supports slow maturation while preserving freshness and purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, game, duck confit, braised short ribs, or herb-crusted beef. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses and Provençal dishes featuring thyme, rosemary, olives, and garlic. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant if possible—especially if opening now—to allow the wine to fully open and soften.
Producer
Clos du Mont-Olivet is a historic family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, founded in 1932 by Séraphin Sabon and Marie Jausset, though the family’s viticultural roots in the area go back further. The domaine is owned by a branch of the Sabon family and has long been regarded as one of the village’s benchmark producers, with estate bottling established more than 80 years ago. Today, the winery remains deeply tied to the region’s identity, combining tradition, old-vine holdings, and a strong reputation for producing age-worthy wines of real character.
